Packing a muffler!

Okay, no obvious jokes! What is the best way to do this, tight or loose?

I'm decatted and sleeved. It's bloody loud and too tractor sounding. The exhaust is off, sleeves out, perforated pipe and fibre glass wool in. However, before it does off to the welders on Monday I'd like to know whether I'm packing it properly and how much this effects the sound.

At the moment, I've packed the wool in quite tight, but will this give me the depth of sound?

I love the sound of cats in with sleeved exhaust, but without the cats its too much. How much difference will de-sleeveing and packing the silencer make to the overall 'loudness' and should I be thinking about the quantity of fibre wadding I'm using or even semi-sleeveing. I've been listening to a few youTube vids of standard silencers, but there's not a lot of decats with standard boxes.

You dont want to pack it too tightly- the packing material needs to vibrate with the sound wave pulses- this is how the noise energy is absorbed.

As long as you don't fit new tires, that and Aussie up speak really wind me up.

Thanks just what wanted to know! Would packing it very tight be a little like sleeving it, but not as loud? I'm considering semi-sleeving if just to keep some of the aggressiveness of sleeving, but without the tractor sound.
