Bike crash on M25, two weeks ago.

We were crawling round M25 a couple of weeks ago heading to Dover, and sat in traffic for an hour. Finally got to the 'front', between J8 and J9, and found we were merely caught in the usual predictable queue of single-cell 'gawpers' at the accident on the other side of the motorway.
From what I could see briefly as we queued up at 1mph was a somewhat battered BMW touring motorcycle, with no front end on. And then 100 yards further up the road I saw a wheel and a pair of front forks....
Does anybody have any idea what happened? I browsed the web and news at the time but found nothing. Collision? Mechanical failure?
I assume the poor bugger died.
The motorway had been blocked for quite a while already when we got there, as evidenced by the five mile queue of parked cars, doors open, camping stoves out, sunbathing traffic uphill from the accident.
