I'd reject the current car as it's not what was desribed and get them to supply the right model - the 1.4 - to the same standard as the one you bought. Minus the brake issues, obviously.

Compensation will not be necessary so long as they put you in the same position as the one you contracted for - i.e. a 1.4, 2 years old, same miles/condition/spec.

Sounds like an error on their part and they will probably refund you, but I highly doubt you will get compensation,I dont think its something they would have done on purpose, you mentioned they are a big chain, it really isnt worth it for them.

You are making a mountain out of a molehill IMO, Take the refund and start looking for another car.

Didn't the issue come to light when you insured the car? I'd be worried I wasn't insured!

If your happy with the car, and as you had not noticed it was a 1.4 I might be tempted to suggest a few hundred quid will send me away...

If you was happy with it for a week or so what is the problem with having a 1.2 instead of a 1.4? Obviously you need to get some goodwill gesture from the dealer.

Lets face it, your life is mainly over because of what they did to you. I think they owe you, and they owe you big.

Large cheque, and the Head of Light Entertainment on a plate. For starters.

Then, they should sign-write (green vinyl, grocer's apostrophes) a big van (their van, at their cost) and park it in front of their own doors.

Then, they should take out a full page in The Bugle, with a photo of you frowning at your massive comedy lottery cheque, and the Head of Light Entertainment rolling around in the gutter outside the dealership.

In the rain.

But you want compensating for having to be photographed frowning in the rain. A holiday should do it. Tunbridge Wells is nice this time of year.

But, but, but.... What about his compensation? Surely he's entitled to £1m and a steamy night with the fit lass from the service counter?! He knows his rights!

Hey - two PH clichés for the price of one!

If anything he should maybe sue the insurance company too for inflating his premium - charging him more for the bigger engine the car didn't have.

The insurance is also a 1.2 on the schedule. I took their insurance so it was basically done in the dealers and didn't check when it came in through the post. Should have but didn't.

I don't want a replacement from them either as the after sales and the hassle with the brakes. Don't want to ever deal with them again.

To me its a huge deal and a lot of money. Ive paid for something I cant use and buggered up my holiday plans.

Good to have views from others as I do realise that im still angry.

Cheers guys
They have really had your pants down havent they, why dont you leave us "Adults" to buy the big stuff, eh.

While I share your frustration OP in cases like this I'd just reject the car, get any costs for repairing car reimbursed and move on. Looking for the vendors point of view they sell hundreds if not thousands of cars and there will be occasions where mistakes happen. No harm done as long as its resolved amicably.

Unfortunately you've now deleted the OP, but you weren't so much looking for advice as looking for support for a particular course of action, which with hindsight you now realise was a bit of an opportunistic overreaction, especially as you have now admitted that you had at least one opportunity beforehand to spot the mistake, but didn't.

Andy and John would love you to take out a full page in their rather wonderful audio newspaper; would certainly save having to sell so many mugs.

Does your definition of "advice" include a pre-requisite for it to agree with your preferences?
