Do modern cars still get clocked?
I'm looking at through classifieds for a BMW (F01) 730d. There are quite a few examples that are 3yrs old, with almost exactly 30k miles.
I'd have thought the majority of these cars would attract much higher mileages over 3yrs e.g. used for chauffeuring etc.
Perhaps I'm being cynical, but were someone to take out a 3yr lease on a new 730d with 10k miles per year limit, how easy would it be for them to tamper with the odometer so that 25-30k miles per year magically becomes 10k per year?

Cars like that would be lease for the first three years of their lives. The leases will have a mileage limit of around 10k a year which would explain the plethora of 30k three year old cars.
However, on the flip side, the mileage limits would tempt some owners to clock their cars before every service to reflect a lower mileage.

This is what I was wondering. I guess you need to go and inspect the car to tell. But I wasn't sure how easy it would be to clock a 2011 BMW... based on the above comments, it seems to be totally feasible.mybrainhurts said:

Yes. I viewed one with a digital dash, showing 58,000 miles.HPI said it had done 123,000 four years ago.
Mileage on HPI should always be taken with a pinch of salt.

I think you'd be able to tell the difference between a car that had done 75-90k and a car that had done 30k.
How? IMO it has far more to do with how the car's been treated and what its use cycle has been.The MOT database should now make it much easier to spot on cars over 3 years old.

Yes and it's mostly the ones under 3 years old getting clocked - since the online mot history came into effect which stops them clocking older cars.You will struggle to spot the differences between a really clean clocked 70k miles 3 yr old Bmw and a 30k 3 yr old example - if it's been well looked after and done motorway miles - unless you are very familiar with them it's not easy to tell the difference.
