R32 driver receives FPN (3pt/£100) for having 215/35 R18 on 8.5J alloys.

Felt it worth linking as the 'stretch scene' has often been discussed.

Link to Pepipoo thread.

Stretched tyres, no front number plate, (presumably) pressed metal plate on the back. Gets what he deserves imo.

Unless he can show evidence of a tyre manufacturer allowing use of a 215 width on a 8.5" wheel, he's going to have a hard time in court.

Still, invited his own trouble with the number plate etc.

Fantastic lets hope to see a clamp down on these muppets with stretched tyres, modifying your car to then lessen the performance of the tyre is idiotic and the scene has produced too many morons with dangerously over stretched tyres (one of my neighbours is a classic example, spotty brainless teenager with a badly modified stbox vw with dangerously over stretched tyres haring around in a 30 mph zone).

Yokohama say it's ok (admittedly 215/40)

Looks like he brought the attention onto himself, but I have a feeling he'll get off with it.

Even if the stretch is within manufacturers guideline? If so, what is the problem?

They don't have a tyre in that size on the table so they don't say anything either way. smile

I'm really pleased. I hope this sends the right message about silly modfications and starts to make an impact before some additional heavy handed legislation comes into play and ruins things for many.

Looks like the guy is now selling the wheels;

http://www.vagcars.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?183...

Good to see he isn't lying about them being 8.5j.

All the pictures of the wheels were deleted but I found a YouTube clip with the car in; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pl-6QraKSm8

The tyres don't look obviously stretched to me. Actually looks like a tidy car considering it's nearly 10yrs old. Was expecting to see lots of gash dub mods but the wheels are actually on straight.

No, in other words Yokohama makes no comment. (There is no listing for 215/35 on that page, so you can't conclude their opinion either way.)

This site says it is ok:
http://www.alloywheels.com/TyreCalc.asp

Type in:
215/35R18 and it says you can fit on 7 to 8.5 inch wide wheels.
Indeed, if 1 inch is 25mm then 8.5 inch wheels would be 212.5mm wide. Now normally the rim would be a bit narrower than the tyre, due to how it's measured, but this doesn't seem to be a problem to me.

I think the issue for the OP in that thread is actually that the policeman may have measured the wheels incorrectly and written them up as 9.5 inches wide (not 8.5 as the owner states). If the guy has 215/35R18's on 9.5 inch rims then it's a fair cop. But he's claiming he doesn't.

So I think the real issue here is really what size the wheels are, 8.5 as the owner claims or 9.5 as the policeman measured. FWIW I think that based on the owners description the policeman has probably measured the wheels incorrectly, as it's meant to be measured on the inside, not the outside.

Have any tyre companies commented on the practice?

Agreed, I was expecting to see some horrendous stretched 'dub scene' turd but that R32 looks really rather nice (although I'm not a fan of the sound with the Milltek).

Looks like they're on 8.5s with an acceptable tyre size so the case should be dismissed imo.

The first piece of information missing is which C&U Regulation the Police allege has been contravened. If it's 27(1)(a), then all the references on Peppipoo regards having to prove dangerousness, are otiose, as all the prosecution need to prove is that the tyre is unsuitable for the use it's being put.

If it's within manufacturers guidelines then fair enough. Driving about with no/ illegal number plates is still quite stupid though.

Indeed. Though I don't really consider clearly legible but non-official number plates to be the crime of the century, it is a clear invite for a tug.
