I bought a car last night, turned up at my local post office today with v5 slip, mot and insurance to be told DVLA system is down so they can't tax it.
I said its a bank holiday weekend and I am at work next week so asked for a letter to say they can't tax it.
She refused, and told me to contact DVLA, but its still not going to get my car taxed.
The police can crush an untaxed car, so I can't win.
I asked her if the police are aware of this before they crush my car and sent me to prison. She laughed and said "they should be" which is reassuring.

Its a shame the DVLA and government are numptys. They still don't realise that even with the new rule changes, they won't catch the criminals who don't tax their car.
Usually because they don't register the car. The only way they will get caught is if they are physically pulled over. So these cameras are pointless. Its easy to be a criminal.

Can you not do it online? Takes a few mins on a phone or computer. Can't remember the last time I actually went into a post office to get a tax disc.

The current system, due to change on 1st October, will send the disc to the registered keeper if taxed on line.

Can you put that in writing and forward it to the OP with your guarantees?

That's what I said.

The current system would send the disc to the registered keeper.

Same here for us today, i put 3 cars out today with no tax, apparently the system will allow to get tax on the reminder, but not on v5 or v5/2. I was told it wont be back on until tuesday earliest.

The problem is I am not registered so as said the previous owner probably could tax it. Bit late now.
We had a system that worked... sort of and to take the system down on a Saturday stinks of incompetence.
I suppose its what we expect in the UK.
Think I will wait till next month now and save a few quid. Not much else I can do ;-)

Ah, so with the new system you can buy a car and tax it immidiatly online? I suppose that would be OK as no need for tax discs. Just a shame they tookbthe system down at a time when you cant

I've just received one of the very last tax discs of all time, starting from 1 September. Among the millions of tax discs issued over the years this must be a valuable collectors item!

If anyone wants to get in with an early offer, just let me know...

Yep, with the new keeper supplement you'll be able to either tax it online or over the phone.

No they cant! Calm down!

It may be, but having your car untaxed for a couple of days falls far short of this.

You need to drink less coffee.

Which is void as soon as it changes hands.
