We've just adopted a lurcher dog and I think an estate car would make life easier than the saloon 535d I currently have. I miss having an estate and the saloon hasn't been that versatile so this seems like a good excuse.

So it needs to be able to tow 2000Kg or more so I can tow my track car, needs to be biggish so we can get all our ste in it and needs to be quick because I like quick things. My mileage has come right down of late so it doesn't need to be diesel. Auto is perfectly ok.

I've thought of simply swapping the 535d for an estate but the short journeys aren't going to do it much good and an rs6 which I quite like the idea of.

Anyone got any other suggestions I may not have thought of? My budget is about 12k.

Thanks,

Mark

A nice problem to have. Slightly left field, but how about a Supercharged FF Range Rover ? Seems to tick all the boxes.

I do like the discoveries and range rovers but even with the big engines they're not that fast and I can't imagine they'd feel that dynamic to drive. Don't get me wrong, I know everything this size will be a bit of a barge but even so. I'm also concerned about the reliability.

Quite like the idea of the subaru though.

I use a Cayenne V8 and I tow around 5500 lbs with it. I tow from Toronto to Arizona and back in April and November..it gets pretty rough treatment and has been very reliable...

Would love a cayenne but the cars in my budget are pre-2007 cars and I've heard really bad things about their longevity.

Holy st, that looks mental.

Max towing weight is only 1585Kg though so can't get one of those. I really need 2000Kgs to be on the safe side although I could do with taking it to a weigh bridge to find out how heavy the car and trailer is.

Doh. Sorry yes it is.

The diesel is 2800kg towing weight.

Normal v8 is cheaper too.

V8 3500kg just about enough smile

Surprising isn't it ? Had a look on AT before posting and they start at about £11k. Got me looking looking down the back of the settee. Lol.

At the risk of going Aussie 300BHP/ton, and I'd guess you'd have to import as I doubt there are any available in the uk, what about a Holden Commodore SS/SSV wagon? 6.0 v8.

Oh, only 1600kg towing capacity.

Very few estate cars, however big, are going to have a 2000Kg towing capability. Most will be sat between 1600 and 1800kg. If you really want to tow over 2 tonnes, you're gonna need a large van (LWB T5, Sprinter etc) or a 4x4 (freelunch, 'cruiser or RR etc)

I don't think the merc could tow 2 tons.

Is the rs6 rated for a tow bar?

i don't believe any of the Audi RS or BMW M cars are rated for towbars. Something to do with engine cooling from memory.

RS's are defiantly not rated for them

Interesting, I always thought it's because of the the large exhausts.

This might be a reasonable shout

Bit of a remap and could be a quick car when not towing.

Just had a google, possible issues with gearbox oil overheating say Audi. I was wrong on the M5, seems it can have a tow bar without issue.
