I reported my 83 year old relative to the Police and DVLA due to his shocking driving standards. He's written off 3 cars in 3 years has regular minor crashes. He bumped a neighbours car the other day and crashed through a wall and landed in a hotel garden the other month.
Told him he shouldn't be driving but no he thinks he's as good as Lewis Hamilton behind the wheel so won't give up driving.
The DVLA say he needs to be tested by a doctor to check he's fit to drive and guess what he passed lol!!
As we speak his latest car is in for repair after yet another 'minor accident'.
He will only stop driving when he kills someone or himself but the law says he fine to drive?????
We live in a mad world!

How on earth is he still getting insurance with that number of claims? Assuming he's involving other people in his accidents...Told him he shouldn't be driving but no he thinks he's as good as Lewis Hamilton behind the wheel so won't give up driving.

Sounds like they really need to be pushed outside their usual driving environment.
A week long driving holiday around France would be good - a mix of the motorways and backroads. The amount of traffic in France is minuscule outside of the big cities and it is a wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable experience driving around the what we would call the A roads, lovely scenery, lovely villages, empty roads.
Do it in an old, slow, very comfy barge so they cannot drive fast and frantically.
I think people who are nervous like this are not nervous of the driving itself, but they're panicked by the amount of traffic around them, the amount of sensory input, and that completely prevents them from "learning to drive", so nothing becomes automatic and they have to consciously think about the act of driving itself. A catch 22 situation.
Removing the traffic and make the environment a pleasant one, and make the vehicle a relaxing one and everything just gels and falls into place.
On the way back to the UK navigate back via increasingly larger towns and more main roads to introduce the challenge of dealing with other vehicles.
(and don't even think of going anywhere near Paris in the car!)

They're not half blind and don't know it do they? I had a girlfriend who used to scare the s
t out of me, everything was last minute and no planing, always flying into dodgy situations and tailgating. Turned out anything more than 50 meters away was blurry and she thought this was normal, looked at me like I had the vision of superman when I read a motorway sign from 100 meters away

That's a tricky one. Can you be honest with this person and say that you don't feel comfortable being a passenger, as you have here? This might follow on with you suggesting that you do the driving when out together. if they make comments along the lines of what they can do about improving I would not point them in the direction of IAM or RoADA. From what you have described they do not and are not ready for advanced tuition provided by these two organisations. The organisations are for reasonably competent drivers become better not to take drivers with basic driving issues and sort them out. I know this does happen from first hand experience but Observers/Tutors are not ADI's with dual control cars. If they are as bad as you say they probably need professional help in a car with dual controls (for peace of mind of the instructor).

Am I the only one who pictured an old man rolling on the lawn, after flying out of the car like some stuntman?SEAN 46 said:

There's a big difference between "medically fit to drive" and "competent". All that's happened so far is that the Doc's said that he's not demonstrably medically unfit.Told him he shouldn't be driving but no he thinks he's as good as Lewis Hamilton behind the wheel so won't give up driving.

I suspect that he's paying for repairs himself, and fibbing to insurance about his clean record.
What do they think of their own driving?
There is no problem in being a rotten driver, so long as you know it. The danger comes when people aren't as good as they think they are.
A bad driver who knows they are bad is going to be a lower risk than a good driver who thinks they are brilliant.
