Thermostat housing gasket

Does anyone know where i get a proper gasket like the damaged one i took off ,the one supplied is little more than a thin piece of card which normally comes free with stats i have purchased in the past .

They charged me £2.75+vat for it and one of the main TVR suppliers . I`m sick of being ripped off

Just use a smear of Hylomar on both sides of the gasket, it should be fine.

+1 Hylomar - I had the same problem, Hylomar and a gasket from a land rover spares place resolved my leak

Just bought a 74c thermostat off probably the same supplier. It has no weep hole in it. Does your one?

The thermostat certainly doesn't look like the one I changed in mine which did have the weep hole.

My gasket was a rubberised type thing, not gasket card.

I get mine from Clever Trevor (AKA Racing Green) £1.20 plus vat...I find them easier and less messy than using hylomar when the dizzie is still in position.

Ideally, the car shouldn't overheat if the cooling system is running properly and the fans kick in as they should. The problem with a 74 degree stat is that you run the risk of the car running cool and not reaching it's optimal operating temperature, especially in cooler weather. The cooler stats are meant for hot climates, not really northern Europe. Most Chims run around 85-86 degrees, with the fans kicking in around 95 and off around 90 degrees. You could put another otter switch in, that switches the fans on earlier, say around 90-92 and off again 86-88 degrees.

Either way, if you want to run with a lower temp stat, then you would be best to replace the otter switch with a much lower temp one, to keep the whole cooling system running as it should. I'm sure somebody like spend will be along soon with a definitive answer!

My car sits quite comfortably in hot weather and slow traffic on the standard system and even managed it with one fan working last year (until I notices). If you're overheating, then you would be better in investigate the cause of the problem further.

Just purchased that one but don`t buy the gasket ! I have the 82 thermostat and the slightly cooler Otter switch .

I'm not overheating. It's a Mk1 430 with unshrouded fans and (in my experience of owning each model of Chimaera) they tend to run a little hotter. Particularly with the cats still in situ.

Whilst the fans do their job I don't like them running all the time when I'm crawling along in traffic.

I'll probably just leave it and bin the crappy substitute thermostat I've been sent

Did you get the large bore stat or the standard RR one? You could always try Water Wetter if you want to reduce temps more?
