..... exceedingly fast!

EVOtv: M3 vs Macan Turbo

0-100mph in 8.6sec, from an M3! That's 911 turbo pace from only about 5 years ago.

(makes you wonder about the claimed "425bhp" Probably the least it makes on a hot day on crap fuel, although modern multispeed DSGs have knocked a good few secs of the typical 0-100 time)

Jeez, that's quick eek The M3 just doesn't look very special to me. The front's cluttered and in 4-door guise it looked very ordinary. And that colour vomit

Stlll take it over the Porsche though smile

Very rapid indeed but I just can't get to like the sound, and that kills it for me. No soul.

Apparently they all dyno around 430 hp at the wheels. 480 hp with a simple remap.

The american guys have seen 540 hp at the wheels using just the piggyback ECU tune and race gas.

The stock M4 I test drove lit up the DSC lights like a christmas tree in first and second, I can’t imagine what it’s like with another 100hp on top of that.
Stupid, stupid fast. I really think it’s time BMW offers an optional AWD version. Yes, yes, I’ll see my self out. getmecoat

For anyone about to dig out the wallet / purse, it is worth noting the next-gen MB A45 AMG and VW Golf R400, launching in the UK in roughly 6 to 12 months' time, will be a half to to 1 second faster than the new M3 and MT. Quicker to 60 and quicker in the 1/4 mile. And roughly 10% to 30% less money. The Ms are about to be overtaken by the A and R.

But they are not RWD. Speed for speed's sake doesn't really matter IMO.

So, the SUV is faster in normal situations. wink

Both are phenominal. True supercar performance but there is something sad about such amazing performance wrapped in the shell of pretty bland shapes.

Speed doesn't matter in an ultimate performance car, just because its slower and RWD. Surely the results count, rather than the details of how they are achieved?

Fun car, RWD for sure, performance bang per buck, does it matter.

those latest hot hatches wouldn’t stand the slightest chance from a rolling start.

A45 typically dynos at 340 hp at the wheels and it’s some 30kg heavier than the M3/M4 with 430 hp at the wheels.

It might be faster off the line purely because of traction but anywhere else on the road it would be an annihilation. Even more so when both are remapped/tuned (see above). So yes, buy an AWD hot hatch if you need to pull away from the traffic lights really quick.

Was it just me or aside from the impressive (for a four wheel vehicle) turn of speed was that the most boring drag race ever?

It was just two gopping to look at cars creating masses of tyre noise, with half the video explaining how you activate the correct traction control, electronic damper and gearbox settings to let the car do everything for you?

to be fair, most "drag races", with the exception of the proper Top Fuel or Funny car events are really rather dull. And these days, with DSG, launch control etc, you just stamp the accelerator to the floor and sit back and enjoy the ride.

What i found interesting was that the Macan couldn't really make it's 4wd work enough, due to it's weight penalty, to get far enough in front of the rwd BMW to negate that cars power to weight advantage. Once the BMW gets into second gear, and can take WOT, it's game over immediately.

That looks like an incredibly dull way to spend money. Fun for 2 quick sprints, then utter indifference until the end of the PCP.

Very impressive m3, I think fast v8 powered saloon cars are very cool though! But the colour doesn't do it any favours, makes it look a bit bland!

Turbocharged cars are definitely the 'norm' now I reckon.

Has anyone else seen the video of the 458 Speciale getting it's a$$ handed to it by a VW Golf yet?

(it was a Golf R and I'm not sure it was standard...)

Is that the same video that was posted in the Golf R remap thread?

The video in which a tuned Golf catches up to a Ferrari then the Ferrari just walks away into the distance? I'm pretty sure the only reason the Golf caught sight of the Ferrari at all was down to the Ferrari driver slowing down to take in the scenery.

Any car with a turbo can be remapped. The new M3 is no exception. Maybe a remapped hot hatch can keep up with a stock M3 but if you apply the same level of modifications to the M3 it will be on another level.

What a borefest. Never thought I would be so nonplussed about an M3, and that is after the lacklustre E92.
