Overshoes, wet weather and soggy feet
Discussion
Good Morning,
looks like summer has come to an abrupt halt and I'm thinking about overshoes for the road bike.
Can anyone make any recommendations? Hoping to get something that will keep most of the rain out and keep my feet warm.
I had an Endura set but the zip went after a couple of rides.
Cheers for your thoughts!

For a tenner, these are great but it's worth waiting until planet x do their bundle packages again, eolly hat, overshoes, gloves and three pairs of socks for £30 last year.

If you are size ten or greater though, you will need the XLs

I have some BBB Waterflex overshopes that are ok, but be aware that water will run down your bib tights and past the seal for the overshoes and soak your feet anyway.
The BBB ones are about £25 from Wiggle and have held up quite well compared to the Castelli ones that I had before.
The only way round this is to wrap tape round the top of the overshoes.

Aim on keeping warm rather than dry!
This is good advice and why i dont bother with much "waterproof" clothing, just a rain cape and good thermals. My bib tights, catelli velocissimo, are plenty thick enough to ride through heavy rain and i've never felt cold or wet in them. The number of times its raining on your commute/ride will be fewer than the number of times its dry but very cold.I use a pair of Hein Gericke motorcycle overshoes.... but HG shops appeared to have all closed in the UK.
Ugly as sin, but I've been forced to ride through very deep puddles many a time and never got a wet foot.
Obviously this will depend on the sole of your footwear, but I've only every warn running trainers with them.

A decent pair of waterproof trousers will hide how bad they look.

I had a set of Bioflex overshoes that were excellent at keeping the wet out, but sadly only lasted a couple of months before they literally fell apart - waterproofing came away from the fabric, zip pull snapped in half, zip's both seized - because I had to cut them off my shoes the shop could not replace them!
I have just bought a pair of Endura Road Overshoes, they're neoprene covered with a rubberised external coating - they look to be durable but only time will tell. The sales assistant was quite honest, she said they perform extremely well in the wet and cold (down to about freezing) but will only last one season. £20 so I will give them a go.......

As above get some Waterprrof boots. I think the Northwave ones are better than the Shimano ones as they don't have the "wicking effect" of the neoprene cuff.
Assos 851 overshoes are by far the best I've used.
I just had a look at the Northwave ones. Thinking that's money well spent.Assos 851 overshoes are by far the best I've used.

Let us know how you get on because I'm thinking of getting a pair of Northwave boots myself. I was bitterly disappointed with Shimano overshoes but I think I just had too high hopes. They seem to buy me maybe 45 minutes longer for dry feet. They do at least stay warm when they're wet!Cheers for all the advice

My first set of overshoes were a Decathlon neoprene pair given to my wife by her colleague, brought back from Belgium by the colleague's husband but found to be too small for him. They were too small for me too, but hey! they were free, so I bloody well made them fit. Then, after really appreciating them on some long, clod, wet rides, I bought a set of my own...

They were excellent, to be honest. Apart from the zips. They always go at the zips! First, I had a long break from the bike, and foolishly left the overshoes out in the garage, and the zips 'seized up' which I think had a lot to do with salts attacking the zip where they weren't washed before storing. Then, after rinsing them out and some brute force, I got the zips working again, only to have one of the pull tags snap. The shoes still work, they're just a pain to get on and off with the zipper broken. I haven't seen them since February this year, so they've probably got the salt corrosion thing going on again, but this'll be their third season, so will have done rather well for a set of overshoes, I reckon. Whatever you buy, though, take good care of the zips to prolong the life of the product is my advice. I tried all sorts, from Fairy Liquid to 'dry' chain lube to keep the zips going on mine, and I'm not sure if any of it did any good, so search online for zip care advice. But those Endura covers really do a fantastic job, while they last...

Did a quick 45 miles with these on this afternoon through heavy showers, lots of standing water and a few localised floods. They worked really well, kept my feet nice and warm, totally dry and they fitted really well over my Bonts. It remains to be seen how well they age but in terms of performance they were excellent.
