One of the many miserys of watching commercial TV is exposure to supermarket adverts.... I have just endured two, one for Tesco, the other Morrisons.

What becomes abundantly clear is why both these companies, along with their two other colleagues sainsbury's and Asda, are stagnating or loosing market share. All they bang on about is how they've 'reduced prices' and that these are not offers, no, they're keeping their prices down.

Is this the best their ad people can come up with to spend their colossal advertising budgets on?? With the near constant investigative journalism programmes exposing supermarket 'offers' and 'promotions' as suspect as best it really is historically unimaginative. They must also consider their customers' intelligence as questionable.

I hope Aldi etc carry on inflicting huge damage on these slovenly, arrogant businesses.

The only way they are reducing is prices is by the underhand tactic of downsizing pack size.

Tesco have become unbelieveably bad for this of late.

Keep it looking the same and drop the weight or quantity.

Absolutely stinks.

I honestly can't remember the last time I watched a TV advert. Just record everything you want to watch onto a PVR, program the skip button to 4 minutes (95%+ of UK ad breaks are exactly 4 minutes long), and never watch another advert again.

Occasionally you get programmes they just couldn't sell advertising for, and then you have to rewind a way, but frankly it's worth it! hehe

Their marketing is predictable and boring as stated above. And reducing pack weight is deceitful and ought to be protested.

They should take some advice from the marketeers of this french supermarket.

Problem with food is that they can't win. Production costs are rising - meat, feed, lard etc etc, are all more than they were 5 years ago. On top of that haulage costs, staff costs e.g. The opt out pension law affects the factories that make the products and the supermarkets and so on.

But food costs have in no way kept pace with inflation - able to buy a meal for a £1?! but if they put prices up they are greedy and disgraceful, if they reduce meat content or sizes they are disgraceful.

There is a huge disconnect with how society spends its income - food is a low priority for many who believe food should not increase in cost.

From friends who work in a production site near me, there is pressure from the big 4 on its food producers to move away from such big promotions and have better every day prices.... We will see.

Though I am no fan of the big four and find veg & meat quality awful and hate the shopping experience - the ads are comically dated in outlook like most of the big 4s actions! Stuck in the 90s.

Edit: after posting I saw How old this thread was - came up on page 1 for me ?!

I'm not sure. Someone should try it. It's about time we embraced real food.

Glad to see rescent reports of profit warnings etc - seem to be hitting them where it hurts and share prices have taken a real battering.
