I'm thinking of taking the plunge on a properly nice watch (I've actually OK'ed it with the missus on the basis that it's equivalent to an engagement ring, and it only seems fair). With that in mind, I have always liked Rolex Subs, and having looked a little more seriously lately, the green dial/bezel is what I really love. I'm not sure if that makes me a bad person?

Before I get totally attached to that idea, what other Sub-like watches are there without going over £5-6k?

When you say Sub like what do you mean? A nice diver or something that looks like a Sub?

If it's the former well there are loads. Obvious choices an Omega Planet Ocean, IWC Aquatimer

If the latter the only thing I can think of is a Blancpain but I'll be honest I don't know prices. I'd imagine you'd have to look at second hand for your budget.

There are tonnes of smaller boutique brands that might catch your eye as well.

I looked at and tried on the green sub, and still love it, but as soon as the blue/black GMT2 came along my affections wavered.

Still happy with that decision.

May well get a green sub in due course as well mind.

I'd suggest trying on a few options, one will feel right.

If you do go for the Green Sub(LV) and you tire of it, they really do keep their value so you would have no problem changing it, they are always in big demand. I quite like it and did try one on in Tenerife a few months ago, but I still love my Black Sub more.

I would say unless you really love the green, go for a black one.

Personally I don't like the green so that ruled it out for me, I then ruled out the Sub as I wanted a Rolex but one that wasn't obviously a Rolex :-) hence I ended up with an Explorer 1 39mm.

Got a black submariner for my 18th a couple of years back, nothing beats that feeling every time you glance at it. Best getting it from Heathrow T5 which is the cheapest place i've ever seen them going

I've got a 16610 LV, a nice twist to the Sub IMO. I find the Hulk a bit too green but the Kermit is just perfect. Holding their money well too.
