Well, the unbelievable has happened....my mum at 61, after 6 years driving a mk5 astra, decided she wanted a "fun" car.

She liked the idea of a convertible after having a few trips in my mx5, and went to test drive a VW Golf cabriolet, the 1.4 turbo one...

Good on her i thought, fun nippy little motor, gets good reviews etc etc.

Then this morning I get a text-

"Just put a deposit down on a 2014 VW Golf Cabrio GTI" !!

I'm fairly suprised, she's pretty sensible (to the point of boring) most of the time....looks like the midlife crisis just took a little while to kick in smile

Super pleased for her, seems like a great car and shes getting a good deal. Rather looking forward to having a poke around in it, and a cheeky drive.

Is a Golf a mid-life crisis car? Really?

For a woman who has owned a cavalier>astra>astra>astra.....yes I would call a GTI a midlife crisis car for her hehe.

My mum did this as well; after my sister and I had moved out during Uni she decided to replace her aging (bubble shape) 1.4 Clio Alize so we went shopping, looking to replace it with the newer version. She did, in a kind of way, when she came back with an Inferno Orange full-fat 182 biggrin And by god she drove the balls off it! There is no sight quite like seeing a full size labrador squeezed up against the back window because some boy racer tried to over take her, but in actual fact she was baiting them by trundling along in 3rd gear, just waiting hehe

She replaced it with a 197 a few years later but sadly never got to enjoy it; big C took hold and that was that :-|

If it's any consolation, your car is still more PH than a convertible version of a hatchback IMO regardless of the GTI badge.

Still, congratulations to your mum though smile

I tried my best to get her in an mx5, but she couldn't quite let go of having 4 seats.

Not my mum, but the MiL has recently got an Abarth 500 SS with red leather interior! looking forward to bying it off her cheap in a few years. She turned into a petrol head a few years ago when we did a bit of a car swap and the wife sold her her old Citroen C2 VTS and she was hooked on pocket rockets after that.

There is that... in 7 years or so when she comes to sell it, the GTI will likely look like it's just rolled out the showroom, she's meticulous when it comes to looking after cars, and only does about 3k miles a year.

Hopefully it won't depreciate like a stone (unlike the long line of vauxhalls!).

One of my very good friends has a Leon Diesel, and is a petrolhead.

His missus has a 420bhp TT-RS, and he's only allowed to drive it if he asks for permission.

Yep, I am in that club. Mum (coming up to 70 years old) has a Honda Integra Type R (DC2). She bought it new and traded in her CRX to buy it. It is totally standard and low mileage. Apparently she regularly gets the local yoofs trying to find out who owns it so that they can offer to buy it. Their faces are apparently a picture when she tells them that it is hers and she has three petrolhead sons who are in line first.

My mum wanted a fiat 500 - went to the showroom and instead of buying a 1.2 POP or whatever it was ended up with a 180bhp 595 abarth.

Shes 64 and never takes it out of "sport" - crazy

Well done your mum!

But no, they never have had a nicer car than me, and used to frequently "borrow" my TVRs when I was at work....

Yes, because we all love people who accelerate hard when you are overtaking them.
