I remember when the Turbo was the exotic creation of firms like Saab, and was technology not to be trusted.

People still talk about complicated diesels.....

It's occurred to me that the last car I had without a Turbo would be over ten years ago. It's becoming harder to find and car without some sort of turbo/supercharger arrangement.

What's new tech today that in 20 years time will be common place?

I like the idea of doing tedious travelling door to door while reading a book or doing some work.

I'll still have something like an Elise for actual driving but as a transport solution self driving cars could be brilliant, especially for the stupid, infirm, unable, distracted or disinterested, which seems to cover almost everyone except for about half of PH.

yes Self driving electric cars.

And for one I'm looking forward to them. There's nothing mainstream currently on the market that I have any wish to drive myself anyway.

hybrid downsized ICE with electrically assisted turbo.

But pretty soon, it's just going to go, and stay, pure EV.

Thread title made me laugh...

Back in the 90s, my boss came to me - we were releasing a new version of our main software package, trade-shows were looming, he wanted a name for it.

"You like cars right? What comes after turbos?"

"What?"

"Our competitors are calling their upgraded software XXX Turbo - we need to go one better than that"

"errr - 16 valve, twin spark ..."

I can't remember what we called it - it wasn't automotive but I looked recently (I left there in 98) and "Eco" appears in the current offering's name - I'm guessing the next one will be "Electro!" ;0

If internal combustion engines are still around then Torque Fill.

ie using electric motors to smooth/fill out the torque curve while the turbo(s) spool as used in the McLaren P1.

As mentioned hybrid gubbins accompanied by improvements in 'box and injection tech, probably.

Car parking is almost at breaking point where I work. By "almost" I mean it was always hopelessly inadequate, and now the places where we could squeeze cars in are barriered off and new office blocks are under construction with a maximum car parking inclusion of 40% of the "desk spaces".

It would be quite good actually to be able to drop myself off at work and send the car away by itself where it could park up until I was ready to go home again.

"I don't care where you park, just go away!"

And watch as the car forlornly slinks away.

Just hope your car doesn't get in with the "wrong crowd" and spend the day smashed out of it's (cylinder)head on 4star, chasing tail (that cute lil Mx5 that parks at the station), and come back late to get you, dirty and dented, and unable to drive in a straight line........ ;-)

We don't have self driving cars yet.
Hybrid we do have - and that will no doubt get better and better.

The only other thing I can think of is LED headlights and electric PAS.

It's got to be hybrid hasn't it? In the mind of a marketer, turbo boost and supercharging makes things faster, whilst hybrid means more efficient. The computer I have just bought features 'turbo boost' processors and a hybrid hard drive. Hybrid has been picked up quite quickly by marketers as a buzz word, much like they chose turbo in the 80's and 90's and slapped it on every conceivable product to make it sound better.
How long until you can buy a hybrid razor? I wager that you already can.

In the case of your HDD it is genuinely an appropriate use of hybrid. It's a small SSD for speed mated to a mechanical drive for big storage capacity.

I'd actually love it if my car went off and did this. I'd shake my head at it disapprovingly, but also smile and say 'you dodgy fecker....but fair play to you, ahahaha!'

I have to drive the entire length of the M4 on Friday night, and if I could have a glass of wine and read a book instead of actually driving, I'd take it in a shot.
