Will they ever be as desirable as their mechanical brethren?

I don't think so. As good as Techie watches are, mechanical watches have that desirability and history that plastic computer driven watches will never emulate. I love mechanical watches and would never own or buy a quartz, its the drama of seeing how good the timekeeping can be over a few months from my mechanical watches. Just my HO what do I know http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-28966866

I too love mechanical watches but quartz has its place. My Sinn UX will be as indestructible as watch can realistically be without being a minging black lump of plastic and my Aerospace Avantage is just fantastic in every way; boarding, biking, running, training. Chronometer rated with chrono, countdown timer, alarm, second time zone and night vision compatible backlight. And it makes me look >just< like a fighter pilot I strongly suspect
Funnily enough I was talking today about that at work with a collegue, i don't really see the point of smart watches, other than their slightly gimmicky design my issues are:
-battery life is way to short on them at the moment, so for me pointless if i'm away from a power source
-obsolescence with new OS/model/feature etc updates, thus no use/value after a point
and
-Most importantly, in a zombie apocalypse/EMP attack/total end of the world a mechanical watch will keep working, work as compass & heliograph, act as bartering currency and as a knuckle duster.

In truth I can guess the time as accurately as I truly need to know it and I am never far from a genuinely accurate clock of some form (computer, mobile etc.). So IMO no, not as a timepiece.
I suspect the first Blake's Seven style teleport bracelets will be quite desirable. They might have a clock on them...
