I long hankered after an M car, which I now own. AMG's, while on my radar were never a car I hankered after. I think for me it was the fact that M's came with a manual gearbox and AMG's only came with an automatic gearbox.

These days though I am starting to feel the other way around, and AMG's are starting to appeal more and more.

Are AMG cars now the current cars in this sector? Or are the M cars still the ones to covet, still the more focused drivers cars?

You covert what you want I suppose.

I mostly prefer the AMG range myself.

C63 look to be more popular that M3 based on what I see on the road if that's what you meant.

I would suggest it depends on your budget. Up until 2 years ago I would have had the then current M3 against a C class AMG any day. However, having been in a newish (9 months old) C63 AMG a little while ago I would now be in a quandary. The current M3 is a stunning car but the noise of a C63 on full chat with after run is something to behold.

First world decision biggrin

M for me based on the gearbox issue you raised.

However, cannot help but wish that I had some of the AMG's thunderous soundtrack.

Have owned both (older versions, but assume the basic DNA holds having driven latest V8 M3 on track several times)

On track/fast country road - BMW, just more tactile, alert, revvy

Real world driving with a mix of town - AMG.

AMG sound much much better and feel a hell of a lot quicker unless BMW being wrung out.

I live in London, if I were to be in the market for one of these sorts of cars I would probably go C63 over M3, although the latest M4 may change that given the torque it brings levels out some of AMG edge for my use. AMG noise though!!

There's always Jag RS too.

Of the M vs AMG, I've never been inspired by BMW and think AMGs are more characterful. I don't like Daimler AG as a corporate entity though and wouldn't give them a penny of my money.

I had an SL55 AMG and an E92 M3 previously, I currently have the new M6 cabrio (F12).

The models don't quite overlap so I normally would choose between them based on which base model suits my needs better (i.e. 4 seater luxury cabrio = 6 series, e-class really doesn't cut it & no S/CL cabrio; 2 seater sportscar = SL, Z4 doesn't cut it).

I don't really like the cheaper AMGs particularly - C63 etc - I'd always take the M competitor over these, I think you get a much better car & a lot more for your money with the M option. But the bigger models, SL/S/CL/etc I prefer AMG.

I think M for agility and better looks. AMG for noise, torque and interiors (this is based on the awesome interior in the new SL63 AMG) - plus the expensive AMG models have a real badass factor that M doesn't have.
