Morning me ol' fruits

I posted fairly long ago about the small issues with a 4.3 Chimaera, after a few months i'm pleased to say that I have John at Brundall Motorsport help me rebuild the engine!

I'd like to share a few things with my fellow TVR heads in the findings.

I bought the car for 6.5k as it was advertised as just a 4.3, in the inspection of the heads it has been extensively ported and found we actually have the big valve heads! Happy days! - Car was only running at 160 horsies though...

The small list of things that made it run at such low power is this...

timing - 8 degrees in retard mode...plugs were fouled after being done less than 1000 miles ago!

Camshaft, very worn. - Tappets, worn.

Spark Plugs - Get the R version, help a lot with spiking

CATALYTIC CONVERTERS! - When you are running in such modes like this, it builds up a hell of a back pressure...it blue the precats way up the tubes...buggered (grind it open and smash them out and then weld up) - this then causes the main cat to fail also, you will notice the exhaust sound is a lot quieter! (Don't suppose anyone has a bolted cat for sale?)

John is now painting the engine block and rocker covers for me. Pics up soon.

I will post lots of pictures soon!

Also the chassis is immaculate - never been refurbished! looks brand new! Get in there 93 model!

just goes to show that the older model cars where the powder coat was contracted out by TVR it was done properly and as shown by your car will last 20 years and will still be in great condition. What's the mileage on the engine if the cam is worn. Mine is 4 litre and the cam was well worn and shunting quite badly. it was on 70,000 when l had it changed? We need lots of pics . good luck with the rebuilt .

74k miles, one lobe was completely shot, all lobes were definately rounded - the tappets were all rounded as well.

pistons are solid, valves are solid ! only thing to change is the crank bearings, crank seal, stem seals for the valves and all engine gaskets.

Got a kent h218 cam to go in, act smooth bore induction hoses, filter, carbon fibre trumpets and eventually a emerald ecu tune.

Injectors getting cleaned out next week.

John told me about the hot start problem, the battery wire is to thin! Need an extra few mill on there and to relocate it.

FIY - IF YOUR DOORS OPEN UP WHEN YOUR DRIVING, YOU JUST NEED TO ADJUST THE CATCHER BAR biggrin !! IT HAS TWO LOCKS.

Mine also flew open both sides...not good, specially if no one is in passenger side, driving down the A14 with a door open is not advisable!

Also, water leaks in the footwell...I had inches, this was the rubber seal along the roof, it directed water down into the car, so you need to bend it outwards again to direct it out the door.

Yes really surprised by the chassis, only has surface rust on the front and the rear is still gleaming.

Have a good daY!

Dave AKA ChimpOnGas did a really good post on replacing the live feed from the battery to the starter:

http://www.pistonheads.com/Gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I did this mod myself and added a couple of extra earths at the same time. It's a real PIA getting the live cable through the grommet in the bulkhead, but worthwhile mod IMO. No need to re-locate, just follow the link above and take the same route as the old live feed. Make sure you get some heavy duty nylon washing line to pull the new live cable through with.

As for earths, I added one from the battery negative, out through the grommet and terminated it on the thread at the back of the nearside cylinder head (you'll need a 3/8 UNF nut). I then made another earth, again from this thread and terminated at the swirl pot bolts). I switched to an E39 Varta battery in my 500 and together with the 50mm cable and strong earths, it cranks over quickly and purposefully.
