Hire Car Query
Discussion
SWMBO has just picked up a hire ca as her own was damaged by a bus yesterday.
The hire care doesn't have a spare wheel of any sort - I asked what happened if the car picked up a puncture & the response was 'call us & we will come out & replace it'.
I thought it was illegal to drve a car without a spare wheel even if it is only a space saver.
Is it illegal or not?

I wasn't sure although it does seem odd to supply a car without even a space saver however if the general consensus is that it isn't illegal I will say thank you all for answering the question.
A quick google search also confirms it isn't illegal. Looks as though I was wrong so it's a good job that I didn't start arguing with the rental bloke!!!!!

even on new mundane cars like vauxhall corsa they give an aerosol can of stuff you squirt in tyre valve and no spare wheel. the spare wheel is a hundred quid optional extra and that isn't even a full size wheel. This is more and amore common place. I would hate to drive with no spare wheel of any sort. An aerosol is not good if you shred the tyre
Have been driving for 25 years + and have probably covered 2 - 300,000 miles and in all that time I've had 2 punctures, so not really surprised that they've done away with the spare wheel. Seeing the number of AA and RAC vehicles changing wheels at the side if the road, it would appear that even if a spare was being carried, drivers nowadays don't know how to change a wheel anyway.
However, I've had more than a few flat batteries and snapped cam belts so I'd have been better off carrying a couple of those as spares. Lol.

i agree no one knows how to change a wheel. they don't know what a jack looks like and even after that stage they didn't know they had security wheel nuts and don't know if they have the nut spanner adapter thing for those wheel nuts. But even if people need aa/rac to change their wheel, they still need the spare wheel, the rac and aa don't have a stock of them in the van. It must really annoy the breakdown services as they have to waste time sorting it out
