Hi all, I have not had any work done to my cars by a garage for a few years now. Only MOTs. Just stuck my car in a garage to have a few bits and pieces done to it. Its gone in for;

Oil and oil filter change
Fuel filter change
Brake service, change of brake fluid and new handbrake cables ( I supplied the cables)
The car is also leaking coolant, got a feeling its a leaky hose.

Can any one give me a rough idea of the bill I will be looking at?

Car is a Mk2 MR2. Thanks.

Did you not ask for a quote before handing it over?

No chance. Only the garage you've taken it to can give you an estimate. Labour rates etc. vary from garage to garage. Surely you asked before you booked it in?

Don't, whatever you do, take something as idiosyncratic as an MR2 Mk2 to anyone other than a specialist.

a. They're quirky as hell (especially in the cooling department)
b. A specialist will find the fault a lot faster.

Fair few about. Ask on MR2OC, IMOC, etc.

I think you're probably close to the target there.

Cheers chaps. Yes its a non turbo. Couldn't get it anywhere else because it was pissing out with coolant. Had to take it to the nearest garage. I havn't just handed it over. They are going to phone me back before they do any work with a price. I was just looking for a rough idea. Thanks again

For those that are interested the quote for fixing the coolant leak alone was £742. Apparently there was one leaky coolant pipe and another coolant pipe that was rotten and while they were there they may aswel replace them both. They said they had to drop the petrol tank out to get to them. Ive told them not to bother. But does this sound right?

£742 to remove a petrol tank and replace two pipes ? sounds a tad expensive to me. Even if you said £75 an hour thats still ten hours work.

Only if it is a BMW Dealership wink

Hmmm........ Ask them to expand on exactly is required, ie: Cost of time and materials individually.

My thoughts exactly. Sounds rather expensive to replace a couple of pipes.

I agree. At the very least you can phone a couple of other garages and maybe a specialist and ask what they'd charge for the same job. If it's a specialist garage they've probably done it before so can give you an accurate price and more importantly tell you if it sounds legit or like bullst that it even needs doing.

Ive just done a bit of research and it seems that these pipes are known as the 'coolant pipes from hell'. They are located above the fuel tank. Ive found a reputable company that sells patterns of the two pipes for £85.

That sounds better. Just need to find someone who can fit them cheaper. Or have a go yourself.

You should find one of the specialists cheaper. Normally the pipes don't need to be replaced.
Where are you based?
There are known specialists in Luton, Bradford, Basingstoke and Wolverhampton I think....
Get over to the Mr2oc or imoc for advice on all things mr2.
