Get a mk1 1.6 mx5 or an import eunos, try it on classic insurance. Soft top, rear wheel drive, easy to service yourself, very reasonable 14 inch tyres. It all adds up. You will have it for years.

There's just about every type of car you could imagine available to meet those criteria, from RWD sports cars to hot hatches to big engined barges and everything in between. The huge question is going to be what's insurable, which is very hard to know. In your situation I'd be looking at MX5s, MGTFs and MR2s. If you can insure it, my money would be going on a mk3 MR2.
