Importing a car from Germany / holland
Discussion
Hi guys, in Europe at the moment and have researched this a fair amount but a few conflicting stories.m
Has anyone actually done it.
Basically looking at used car over 10 years old, can get it insured in chassis number.
Have passport and copy of licence with me.
What do you need at each border controll ?
Have an option on two cars one Netherlands registered and one registered in Switzerland but being imported to Germany.
Advice greatly received as may buy on Friday then attempt !! To drive home
Thanks
Phib

I did this twice about 15 years ago. You need the owner or trader to put the car on Transport plates. This can take a couple of days but you can go down there and do it on the day. Not sure about weekends though. In regards to borders, nothing. Just passport but you will need proof that vat has been paid and the log book to register it here. Just be very careful, on my second trip I bought a stolen car that hadn't been reported yet! It took me 18 months to get my 32k back and about 2k in legal fees.
It was one hell of a surprise when Sussex car crime unit turned up at my house with a flatbed.
Is there such a thing as a euro hpi now? There wasn't then, not that it would have been helpful.

I bought a car in NL a few years back. It had to be "de-registered" in NL via a local office equivalent to the DVLA (but efficient). They also issued me with transit plates and 3rd party insurance valid for 1 month. I think it cost €150.
Car was road legal with valid Dutch MOT.
Eta: the Dutch authorities provided all the paperwork and stamped a copy of the sales documents from the seller.

To be fair I don't think they knew but it was their behaviour afterwards that shocked me. Basically it was my problem to resolve, tough s
