Can't see office network?
Discussion
Ok, so I've built this PC and I've managed to load everything ok (even with a SATA drive!) I've networked via a switch and Linksys ADSL router, but :- the network won't let me see the other computers?
I've run the network wizard and it has the same workgroup name as the others but says I have no access?
Any help please

Can you "ping" the other PC's?
To find their ip addresses:
start>run
type cmd
in the black box, type ipconfig
that will give you the IP address.
On each pc, get a cmd prompt and try to ping the other machine, ie.
ping 192.168.0.1 (or whatever) repeat until you know what can ping what.
If you can't ping it, it's connectivity (firewalled, duff cable etc) if you can, then try to ping by machine name. Post back what you find and someone will pick up I'm sure

It sounds like you don't have a DHCP server running on your network. You may have set up your PC to obtain an IP address automatically, but without DHCP it won't obtain one (or not the correct one for your network anyway).
If it's a broadband router most have the ability to set up and run DHCP on that. Might be worth a check.
Hope it helps

For a start, collect the following info...
Use ipconfig /all from a command prompt to find out what your problem PC thinks are its IP settings.
Try the same on another PC that does work.
Ensure things like the DHCP setting and default gateway are the same.
If you make no progress then post the details from the aboce checks here and we'll have a look.

firewalls will block the capability to "see" the other pc's using network nieghborhood. However, if you have correctly setup your connections, you should still be able to use resources on the network.
Personally, I would set up a VPN tunnel between your remote and network, either using Windows, or better yet - a hardware solution of some sort. You really don't want to have network traffic running over an unencrypted public network if you can help it...

Is it LAN or WAN?
If it's a WAN, you'll probably need an LMHOSTS file unless your primary DNS is on pointing to one on a company network.
I was working on the assumption this is a LAN with internet connectivity, not a link to head office.
Are all the machines just running TCP/IP (important this!)

Back again after the weekend
Right, don't get too technical because I'm only a country lad:-
The IP address seems to be from the same source and just ends in 105 when my other pc is 101.
The subnet mask and default gateway are the same as the other Pc, I can see the new Pc from the old Pc in network neighbourhood but not the other way around. Just get a message saying that I do not have access to the workgroup when I try and click.
Does this help?

Network browsing's fairly advanced... so don't be too upset if it won't work.
Just click Start->run and type "\name" where name is the network name of the computer (found in System Control panel, Computer Name on XP).
Or type \192.168.0.101 i.e. the IP address of the computer you want to access.
N.B. The former works best for me if you install IPX/SPX!

Can't get a network path to work either way around as you suggested, also I cannot ping the address of the new pc from the old even though it sees it?
Forgot to say, yes it is just a LAN (5 Pc'S) and they only have TCP/IP installed.

One thing to check with Windows XP Pro is to make sure that Simple File Sharing is not enabled.
To check...
1. Start Windows Explorer
2. Go to the Tools Menu and select Folder Options
3. Click the View tab
4. In the Advanced Settings box, scroll to the bottom
5. Make sure Use Simple File Sharing does NOT have a tick in it
Hope that helps

Hokey cokey matey - few questions and a few more things to try.
Am I right in saying...
They are both Windows XP Pro machines?
They are both on your local network?
What might be worth a try to to ensure that both machines have a user account and password that match each other. Eg. create an account called Aprisa (or whatever) on each PC and assign the same password to the account on both machines also.
Log onto the machine as that account and then try to access the other machine.
We'll get it sorted one way or another!

Having problems with Natwest setup at the moment as well !
Ok, sorry should have said the old machine that I am using is Win2000, the new is XP pro as as stated (all other machines are XP pro (hence the update).
I have no password protection on the new machine as yet so will apply the same as the old one.
Cheers for the help
