Well, is there?

I seem to see at least one a day, slammed, alloys, spoilers etc on a distinctly average family car. When did this happen and why?

It's just the dub scene.

Not my cup of tea but to each his own. Some of them look fking dangerous though.

confused

It's not rocket science, people enjoy modifying cars. Just because you may need a 4 door saloon capable of transporting your family around shouldn't have to mean you can't still enjoy your hobby.

I agree. Every other old pass at I see is scraping the deck. I have no idea of the appeal of these cars to the dub scene. Same with boras. I'm not against modifying cars at all but why these?

The ones with added rust and/or NATO tank accessories and anti-satellite paint are particularly sad, in my not at all humble opinion; still, someone buys Mini Countrymen...

Dub scene seems in part to be about stripping off as much exterior trim as possible to create a smooth, rounded, featureless look. I suppose a bit like a polished pebble.

Passats from the early 2000s need less work to look featureless.

Driving across half the country on Sunday I saw loads of these dub things. I think they look fking stupid. Well I am old hat now at 29. The only good thing is they ruin them so much they all sit in lane one hoping a wheel don't fall off I guess. smile

Just the latest trend for the young cool kids. cool

...and then putting on a rusty bonnet. I can get and appreciate most of the scenes, but the whole dub scene is beyond my comprehension.

I saw a Passat CC that had lowered suspension and a splinter camo vinyl wrap. I think it looked pretty cool.

Not a fan of the whole collapsed suspension look though. I saw an A6 estate that had had that treatment and it was bouncing like Clarkson's pick up truck that he turned into a speedboat with solid suspension.

its very old hat and the preserve of only a few sad cases who are old enough to know better but just cant let go of that "Scene" (as if it has any purpose to exist in the first place)

someone from the scene will be along to say "schlep", "sheeple", "innit", "bruv", etc.

Iv noticed a lot of passats and boras around on polish plates with lots of stick on bits, if that counts as modifying?!

I see a few Passats/Boras in this style in Aberdeen - they aren't my sort of thing, but each to their own I guess, I can't see why it attracts the displeasure several have displayed in this thread.

I kept my Passat unmodified - after all it was a very competent yet boring saloon. Why make it a flawed (hard ride etc) yet boring saloon?

Since selling it, mine has been extensively modified...

VW Action took place a Santa Pod last weekend - apparently.. this may account for the recent prevalence of slightly nuts VAG based activity.

Although an R32 blue W8 Passat on split rim / gold BBS - non Stanced and non streched ,mind - would be right up my street smokin .

I see a lot of them being driven true boy racer style, not just looks but the drive, and I can only assume this:

Cheap to buy.
VW makes it a 'cool' car?
Many are turbo diesels - so cheap to run
As above but also torquey - can "have" other cars away from the lights
Cheap to modify - ebay turbo and remap for BIG POWER - until it goes pop...
