PEOPLE GET THE HUMP OVER PLAN FOR ROAD
Next Story | Previous Story | Back to list

A Stonydelph residents'

Group has sent a six-page objection to proposed speed humps along a local road.

Stonydelph Action claim that the humps planned for Fossdale Road will create pollution, congestion, noise and damage to cars, roads and nearby buildings.

But council chiefs say that they are not planning speed humps, but 'accident reduction pads' which are just three inches high, and that the scheme is all part of the countywide Safer Routes to School initiative.

Chris Cooke, secretary of Stonydelph Action Residents Group said: "This objection is extensively researched and very serious. Research proves what many already suspected, humps are harmful and blight communities. They create pollution, congestion, noise and damage to cars, roads and nearby buildings.

The costs are enormous - without a shred of real evidence to show they prevent a single accident."

In April this year the Herald reported how ambulance paramedics had complained that speed humps delayed response time for emergencies. They estimated that just three road humps could delay an emergency ambulance by one minute and cited road humps in the Silver Link and Kerria areas of Tamworth as a problem.

But local county councillor Peter White says that the plans are all part of the 'Safer Route to Schools' campaign.

"These are not humps like the ones in Silver Link Road. It seems sad that we can not get some sort of speed reduction near the entrance to two schools. We are trying to encourage people to walk to school.

"We are in a consultation process and residents can submit their comments. But in the last 12 months I have received three petitions and all were about road safety issues."

The county council will make its decision in the new year.

That's a very silly name.

I propose they be called "safety pads".

Yup, 'fraid the A ship left a while back. Seems they decided not to bother with the B ship after all, just left us to it.

I knew I should have paid more attention at school.

so *very* safe. No problem for trucks and buses, but a BIG problem for bikes & "low" cars that can normally stop quicker than said trucks & buses. A triumph.

A bigger problem for ambulances trying to carry people (bikers...) with spinal injuries.

Stupid things.

I'm all for the new and exiting 'Safety pads'
they go nicely with my 'dignity pants' and beanie hat
they also sound a bit like knee protection when skateboarding..

When driving my truck I find that a lot of speed humps are better taken at 20-30 mph as I get a smoother ride over them. Any less and it really hurts my back, even if I go over at walking pace. This is where the problems start, if a car is in front of me that needs to stop every time they get to the speed bump I have to drop right back so I can get a free run at them.

Or they could remove all the lane restrictions, bus lanes, dodgy timing on traffic lights and speed reduction measures and give the roads back to road users. Then enfore the law better with an increased number of (real) police.

There must be very few schools where the maximum speed limit can be reached when the kids are about, what with the traffic and amount of 4x4's blocking the roads. Assuming half an hour morning and evening when it's busy, that's five hours a week for 40 weeks out of the year! 200 hours, that's 8 days. So we have to put up with the damned humps for the other 357 days of the year! Spend the money for speed humps on educating kids to cross the road properly, which will benefit them wherever they have to cross the road not just outside the damned school!
