What car salemen have to put up with!
Discussion
A guy I work with has just handed over a shiney new 64 plate car for a customer on finance with a £8k deposit.
Took him over 2 hours as the customer only wanted to pay £5K of the deposit, take the car home and then pay the remaining £3k on Monday.
Would they go to Asda, and do that?
You can tell its a reg month?

Typical Sept 1st bs.
Had one customer who insisted he be allowed to pick up his car at 12.01 so he got the absolute most out of his new registration. I bet hes the type that sits in his hotel room until 1 minute before kicking out time too.
A person who buys a car intentionally on new reg day is a person I never want to associate or converse with. The logic boggles my mind and what else there life is full of would probably kill my brain to death within 30 seconds of meeting themHad one customer who insisted he be allowed to pick up his car at 12.01 so he got the absolute most out of his new registration. No, but Asda don't invite haggling over the price of a tin of beans like they do a car.
Erm, I'd imagine the haggling on a car is done prior to collecting it?When you collect, you pay, you take the car, thats what i thought anyway.

I'm afraid people need to accept some people will ask. You don't ask you never know.
We get asked for discount on the parts we sell all the time. "Do I get a discount for ordering four wheels" was my favourite...I don't mind people asking, but some people really get the hump if you refuse and act like a discount is some sort of consumer right.

There's never any harm in asking for a discount! I'll always ask on any purchase over about £150. The worst that can be said is "no". Last time was two weeks ago, buying a new Babolat tennis racquet for my lad in an independent sports shop. The racquet purchase was about £175 and, just by asking the question, I got a cover and two cans of tennis balls thrown in (sticker price of about £30 - cost of probably sweet F.A).I don't mind people asking, but some people really get the hump if you refuse and act like a discount is some sort of consumer right.
IMO, too few people in the UK are willing to ask for a discount / something thrown in.

The couple were not asking for more discount, they just wanted to pay the remaining £3K on Monday.
It's OK to ask for a discount, not a problem with that.
But when the deal has been done, financed and just about to hand over the car,
Thats just taking the pi$$.
Steve
So if you had a definite guarantee that the money would come in on Monday and all legals were covered, why not let the customer do this. It's OK to ask for a discount, not a problem with that.
But when the deal has been done, financed and just about to hand over the car,

Maybe his bank had screwed up leaving him 3k short until Monday and maybe he'd promised his grandson a ride in his shiny new car, and didn't want to let him down.
If you had all your bases covered from a risk point of view this might have been the opportunity to gain a customer for life ....and your oppo blew it.

One of the reasons we aren't allowed to register a car until full cleared payments have been received, removes any of this hassle, or cards not clearing at handover. It's OK to ask for a discount, not a problem with that.

Absolutely! Perhaps when you sell your car, someone will buy it, but tell you that they want to pay the rest off 3 days later, you'll happily let them do that, right? Just because its a business rather than a private sale, doesn't make the fact that this is abject idiocy.Maybe his bank had screwed up leaving him 3k short until Monday and maybe he'd promised his grandson a ride in his shiny new car, and didn't want to let him down.

How does that work, then?Only ever bought one new car but it was registered and I had the registration number so I could get insurance prior to handover - signed the final finance docs on the day of collection and drove off
I was under the impression the finance would only be cleared and released once the finance company had a registration number against the agreement?

Did not blow it at all, they were just trying not to pay the full amount till Monday.Maybe his bank had screwed up leaving him 3k short until Monday and maybe he'd promised his grandson a ride in his shiny new car, and didn't want to let him down.

Whats stopping him going and selling the car, we the dealership are £3k down and may never see that money again.
