Porsche driving day, 911 GT2, a bit underwhelmed..

So I took out a nissan GTR (fast, grippy, but not that involving) and a 911 GT2 PDK which was super involving, I really liked, but was hugely underwhelmed by the gearbox.

It had controls on the steering wheel for shifting up and down but they took over a second to react.. Why is this?

My current car, a BMW Z4 with DCT shifts so fast at wot that it kicks your head back, I was expecting at least this on the 911 but the shifts were incredibly slow/late in comparison it made me think a potential switch to the 911 would be manual box only.

Any thoughts on why it was so slow to shift? At one point I shifted down three times in error because I thought I hadn't clocked the controls.

In which case the tutor I had on the day didn't know what we were driving then! As it had no badging I've no idea what model it was (other than it being a 911). Question remains why it was so slow to change gear?

Back to basics, do you even know what era of 911 it was ... 993, 996, 997 etc?

Not really, because when I posted I thought I knew what it was because I was told it was that Mr Cleverpants!

It was probably only a couple of years old if it helps. I'm no Porsche egghead so I trusted what I was told it was.

I'd suggest you find out what you were driving as a starting point.

Does this help narrow it down as a year and possible model? The steering wheel was exactly like this but black;

Wow really? It didn't look or feel that old! Still quite shocked about the shift speeds but then I'm comparing with a 2009 DCT I guess which is perhaps not fair.

2009 gen 1 turbos had the gen 2 PCM. I know, I had one.

As above, old tech torque converter'box. I'm surprised the shifts were as slow as you suggest, mind.

A pdk would be much more similar to your dct.

You mentioned 2006 to 2009 which implied a turbo.

I don't believe you can tell from that dash shot? 997 gen 1's were introduced 2004.

I had a 2009 35i Z4 with DCT and then a 2011 gen 11 Cayman with PDK and the gearbox on the Cayman is way way ahead of the DCT.

Tiptronic of course old tech now especially compared to pdk, but was not as slow as many think .5 shift, but you need to know how to get the best out of it.
