A couple we know lost money to a guy some years ago and he has now resurfaced, same name same type of business in the finance sector although now in the Channel Islands. Any idea other than a Google search how I can check his history within the finance sector in the UK.

I don't want to post a name as it may set bells ringing

Thanks

The FCA authorise and regulate all financial advisers in the UK. I would start with them. They should be fully aware of any history. Unofficial checking would be more difficult. Best of luck it is a not uncommon problem.

FCA register is here (don't be alarmed that it still says FSA in the URL!): http://www.fsa.gov.uk/register/home.do

Won't be of much help if the person is offshore (and outside the FCA's regulatory remit).

Tony Hetherington at the Mail on Sunday loves these cases.
However, if the individual is practising legitimately in CI, he should be listed on the FCA website as suggested above.
If he is and has serious history, consider us very intrigued indeed.
