I've seen a car I rather like the look of, a 2007 model, on ebay, but its on Jersey.
Would I have various taxes and duties to pay, bringing it onto the mainland UK?
It's not the rarest of cars but they aren't on every street corner and I like the colour, spec etc

If the car has never been registered in the UK then you'd have to pay VAT. If the car was previously registered in the UK and you can prove it, you should be fine.

I think you have to pay import duty. You also have to pay 20% VAT on the total import value, including the duty.

If it's been registered in the UK before, insure it on the chassis number and re-registered it; there will be no VAT or duty to pay.
If it's not been registered in the UK before, you'll have to pay VAT on the purchase price, and provide evidence of paying this before insuring it on the chassis number, and re-registering it.
If it's more than 3 years old, either way it'll need an MOT too.

I've done it with a motorbike, it's straightforward but HMRC took a while to send me proof of VAT payment.

Thanks all
The car is starting at £12500 with a BIN of £16000 if I remember correctly
Thats a whole heap of duty & VAT
Need to ask the vendor
And need to sell the TVR that another timewaster came to view today.

And, if it's less than 10yo and has never been UK-plated, it'll either need a Certificate of Conformity or an IVA.

Before you buy make sure you get it checked out here.
The flooding after the hurricane was widespread and effected a huge number of cars. A good cleaning inside got rid of the obvious signs of water damage just leaving rust and bad electrics...
I live in NYC and the number of 'wet' cars being sold is scary. Most should have been scrapped.

It says pretty clearly in the description of the car: It was re-registered in the UK late 2007. I purchased it in February 2009 and brought it to Jersey, Channel Islands

Ask if he has all those docs, you'll be fine with nothing to pay

Apparently registered in the UK by a non taxpayer, so whilst registered, no tax or duty was paid.
Still need to sell the TVR first though

Whether it was registered as zero-VED (disabled) has no effect on whether VAT and duty were paid.

If it was previously UK (or any EU) registered, there's no VAT or import duty to be paid on a re-import. VED would, obviously, be as normal.
