Advice or knowledge appreciated please.

I am currently looking to buy two watches, one for my 40th birthday (Royal Oak or similar) and one mid size steel Rolex to apologise to my wife for various bits of poor form connected to the same event.

I'm travelling to New York for work for the rest of the week and it's suddenly occurred to me that it may be cheaper than good old blighty.

Am I correct?...and, if so, any decent advice on both new and used dealers?

Cheers!

With the strength of the pound, it may well be cheaper, but remember you are in NYC, so foot fall and big spenders are both high. There is a Rolex boutique on 5th that has an enormous selection to choose from and many others around the city.

As for used dealers.... I have only seen a few in the shopping areas, most are spread a little further out, but given the nature of these purchases, I would be inclined to take the hit and go to an AD.

Head to the diamond district if you opt for a used piece.

I didn't think buying new in NYC made much financial sense when all said and done. Depends what you want, of course.

Good luck.

NY sales tax will be added unless you get it shipped out of state. NJ counts for this purpose- even if it is a hotel. Get it shipped there and you will pay zero sales tax. SOme dealers are happy to knock of sales tax without shipping it, some aren't. Sales tax applies to both new and used.

If you want used, then 47th between 6th & 5th is where to go - the entire street on both sides is wall to wall watches and diamonds.
Haggling can be hard (practically every place is owned by jewish guys - that is not a racial slur, just a fact that they haggle very hard!) but you are spoilt for choice, especially for rolex. Don't go here on a weekend if you can help it.

Avoid tourneau if at all possible.

Forgot to feedback on this.

In short, London is a cheaper place to get a watch, new or used. There's not a massive amount in it with most brands but it is enough to make a difference. I looked across Manhattan at both AD's and used specialist's. The diamond district in mid-town (46th-47th) was the best and what was good was the high volume and wide choice. You can get pretty much whatever you want up to high-end PP instantly.

Oddly enough, ended up buying both watches from my home town in the UK (chose a Nautilus instead of the RO though).

I walked down 47th yesterday and was amazed at the quantity of really high end stuff. One window had probably 20 PPs in the window, which I've not seen even at an authorised dealer.

Out of interest I enqured about a brand new old stock 16600 SD - first offer was $7k, though I've no idea what it would realistically have settled at had I been seriously buying.
