Swap s2000 for Impreza p1?
Discussion
Does anyone have experience of both?
I've enjoyed the s2000 of the last year but following a few big bills (just general maintenance) I feel like a change.
Always fancied a p1 - can see it being a similar level of impracticality in terms of being a bit noisy and stuff for a DD. but more practical with hard top, 4 seats, 4 wheel drive.
I'm looking for one with around 60k miles but engine rebuild a must. Not sure if ill miss the s2000 though.

That's a fairly enviable position to be in!
Is the P1 standard?
Things to look out for would be rust (but you get that on both).
The Scooby will cost you more in petrol (oil consumption/changes about the same).
They are completely different beasts but having moved from an S2000 (via few other bits and pieces) to a Scooby, I've not looked back.
Having said that, I love the Scooby for how it puts the power down over the 4 wheels, the handling and the constant noise as opposed to just in vtec.
Although mine's not a P1, I've been in one and the experience was fun and raw.
Things you will miss about the S2000....the gear change, convertible aspect and those straights where you can get above 6,000rpm!
I think the Scooby's performance far outweighs these though.

I would choose the S2000 from the P1 and S2000.
The S2000 is a better driving machine and is likely to be more reliable. You say you had big bills with your S2000, but they will be nothing compared to a P1, trust me!
In fact, when I was planning to change the P1, the S2000 was on my list. Lack of rear seats counted against it, so I bought a BRZ.

Right! I wasn't really aware that the p1 would cost so much to maintain.
S2000 seems to need a lot doing all the time to keep on top of it -
Just had a new set of tyres - £350
Service and new rear pads - £215
New front pads DS2500 - £100
Mot and tax etc etc
Needs new drop links and radiator - just seems never ending at the moment.
The scooby would feel more powerful I'm sure but I can imagine the S2000 being a better drive. Ill probably keep it until next summer.

Sti 5 or 6 Type, P1 owners will tell me I'm wrong, but they are better car to drive.
I used to drive one quite a lot and it was brilliant to drive. I love the look of the p1 though and it's a bit more special. Also it can pull off the looks now whereas a most other imprezas from that era look too dated IMONot quite the same as you but similar. I traded my DC5 in for a hawk STI. At first the Impreza is a different league with acceleration and a totally different drive but after a few weeks your used to it. I dont regret getting one as its something I always wanted but I will be picking up another DC5 at some point as its just a lot more unique and feels more special.
I'll be another to say Type R over a P1. Looks wise there's not much in it, and Type R's tend to be half the price of a P1 and have all the good stuff Prodrive ripped out to make the P1 (DCCD, better rear brakes)
The P1 was built from Type R chassis' anyway. The majority of the Subaru community see the Type R as the better car than the P1.
In fact, over the past few years the prices of P1's have been dropping, whereas the Type R's are going up if anything. I bought mine 2 years ago for £2500
.
Version 5 Type R. (not mine)

Get the Scooby. What about a newage car?
Newages are heavier but more refined. The classic shape has always been seen as a lot more raw and a lot more of a drivers car. The "R" and the "RA"'s prices are going up, whereas I've just seen a WRX blob for sale for £2.5k. Real men buy RAs - just so we're clear where I stand.
The p1 is overpriced and inferior to the type R . You wont lose much (if anything) on either - youll just be spending more money for less goodness on the uk model.
As to whether you should or not.. hard to say, im on my second 300+bhp car (ra and a megane)- both have had loads of grip and ive really struggled to find opportunities to make use of them beyond traffic light dashes as theres really no challenge to your average country road at anywhere near legal speeds and both would happily see you in triple figures within 12 seconds ofbsetting off . The megane is more fun because at least wet roads give you something to think about, the scoob just ignored weather.
If your goal is to go extremely fast everywhere in any conditions then go scooby, if youre after a challenge then it may not be the best option.

Those figures are around the same as I would expect to pay for the Impreza as long as you are not taking it to a main dealer. Honda and Subaru consumables are about the same cost and its a bit of a myth that the Impreza is crazy money to run over any other performance model. If anything big goes like a gearbox or diff you are looking at a simular cost to replace as on the S2000 with the Impreza taking up a little more labour time perhaps.S2000 seems to need a lot doing all the time to keep on top of it -

As for driving, I went from a simular to the S2000, MR2 Roadster to the Impreza and they are worlds apart. The roadster was a right laugh to drive and would keep you on your toes, nothing is quite as much fun as getting the tail out through a corner and I really do miss the summer days through the Beacons with the roof down. There is no doubt that you would miss the S2000 on a sunny day but the power delivery and ability of the Impreza is something special rain or shine!!
