Cheap DSLR ?

Which of these would make an ideal daily camera to start out DLSR photography ? Just want something to hack around with , a step up from smart phone camera, with say a 18-55 and -300mm lens.

Budget dependent of course but if it was me I would go for one of the more modern ones eg 1100/1200 or 500/600 if the pennies allow smile

Without a budget it's pretty much impossible to answer but the 50D for £259 looks like a decent balance of price, age and features.

As cheapnas possible. What's the 720p video like on the 550d ?

Bit rubbish really, wouldn't buy a DSLR for video.

550d is a fine camera for video. I use a 5diii. For the right type of video work there is not a lot that can touch it.

If you are looking for something to record a documentary at high quality on a budget then they are hard to beat.
