Since I bought my Mk 1 GT3 a couple of months ago, it has developed an irritating "fixture" noise from the back of the car, which is highly unpredictable relating to speed/revs.

Through "careful passenger testing" by pressing down on the back area around the GT3 badge it does significantly reduce the noise.

Any clues I could look at/try out before I take it in lose lots of money stripping it down. Its becoming damn annoying....

Anyone else had this?

no but with the roll cage and harness attatchments clanging in the back of my MK1 i would be amazed to hear any fixture rattles at all!

Sounds like the engine lid is a bit loose. I doubt it would cost the earth to have the catch adjusted

I'm surprised you can hear anything above the flat 6 roar at circa 8k revs

The engine sound is awesome and that noise is something I am absolutely not worried about.

Trouble is you know how you unconciously programme your ears to filter out noises. This one is the same feeling you get with someone scraping their nails down a blackboard and once you start getting irritated, its hard to shake

I'll check the engine lid

Try the rear speaker screws too, my Mk2 had a slight rattle noise at speed and it turned out one of these screws was slightly loose

Noises go bye bye.

Don't know about the engine lid - pressing down around the GT3 badge (I presume you mean the big one you see as you look backwards, embedded into the carpet) is nowhere near the engine lid (as far as I remember).

You might have to lift the carpet and see if everything is screwed down properly - which probably means taking out the rollcage - so if you have a procedure for doing this, please let me know - I want in there to fit rear speakers.

I had a metallic rattling sound in my GT3. Turned out to be one of the metal clips that holds the trim in place immediately below the rear window. I think I recall there being around six of these clips. Give that a go.....failing that, find someone small with big ears to sit in the back whilst you drive and they can prod and listen in the back. If they fail to find anything you can then show them the amount of G force a GT3 can generate around a roundabout!!
