Afternoon chaps!

OK so I needed a Ford IB5 gearbox for a project im working on and came across an ebay seller selling off a "New Old Stock, Still in original crate" gearbox for £99 plus shipping - great i thought, i'll have that.

Arrives, looks reasonably clean, its clearly been on the shelf for a few years.

Anyway somehow it didnt seem quite right to me, it appears to have been painted with a thin cote of what looks like silver hamerite, this cant be factory, surely? i thought they would all be bare aluminium...?

So I took off the end plate, and this is what i found:

Opinions please - is there any way, AT ALL that a NOS item should have this much crud in it, and have glass beads stuck to INTERNAL components??
Looks to me like an old box, cleaned, glass bead blasted, and painted. not re-manufactured either.

I think your suspicion that it is actually "Old old stock and probably knackered" is correct.

Oil should be golden colour even if stood, and definitely no foreign matter in it, and as you say should not be painted.

But, is £99 normal price for used one?

£99 quid seems very cheap. I suggest emailing the photos to the seller and showing him what you found and that you are worried.

That being said, if you clean it up is it usable? Or can parts be salvaged and sold on as spares or used as spares in another gearbox?

Yes, they said they had sold 8, ish so im assuming they are just clearing space, the crate was quite big.
I have, and guess what, first reply was arsey, no further replies, so ive started an ebay case.

It may well be usable, BUT i dont want to have to strip it, clean out all the crushed glass bead residue etc etc.

Surprised your claiming through eBay. You're not likely to find better for £100 any where else are you?

I'd far rather have a functional but grubby used box without glass beads inside it than this pile of crap. IB5 boxes are very common (used in many Ford models) so a s/h box should be pretty cheap.

I'd rather have the "pile of crap" where there is a chance it's new or re-built and be willing to run £10's worth of cheap nasty oil through it and drop it out after 20 mins.

Seems fairly clear cut, did you buy with Paypal?

Pop cases back on, lodge dispute, await refund. Tell seller he can come and get it.

Regardless of cost; it's not as described, not what the OP wants and against ebay terms.

Running £10's worth of oil through it is not going to remove all the glass beads. How long do you think it will last with what is effectively grinding paste in it?

It's just an old box that's been spruced up. Surprised the word 'barn find' wasn't mentioned. smile

This.
The seller has to arrange return costs now as part of the new eBay rules. So you won't be out of pocket at all.

Get rid of it - he's trying it on. Doesn't matter if it's only £100 - he bought what he thought was an old 'new' box. Some people shift old furniture for peanuts, that doesn't mean you buy an oak table and an MDF Ikea unit turns up does it??

Ebay will have your back on this one if it is a trade seller through Buyer Protection. Doesn't matter what it cost - it is not as described.

Looks like a cheap and nasty cosmetic refurb rather than 'new old stock'. The manky oil, rust and glass bits, plus the bolt heads on the casing that have been painted over will be evidence enough that this is not as described.
