Been round it or through it but never been to it.

This summer I decided to get onto google maps, and look for places to cycle to, which I had previously only ever driven round or through without stopping. I have been pleasently surprised by a couple of the destinations, and routes which have only been accesible to a bike. Has anyone else tried this? Where did you get to?

I've only just gotten back in to cycling, so prefer routes away from road at the moment.

I find the SusTrans map much better than Google for discovering cycle tracks and towpaths etc. Last week I found one half a mile away from my house that I never knew was there!

This was surprisingly nice. I've been past Salisbury a lot. I was pleasantly surprised how nice the place is, when you get there without the hassle of the inevitable traffic chaos. The ride in was very nice too.

I did Newbury via Andover on the back roads as well. Again, both places I've been past or through on numerous occasions, but never to.

I learned something at Andover. "Half way down the stairs is a stair where I sit, there is no other stair quite like it" was not, as I thought, attributed to Kermit the frog's annoying nephew, but in fact, to A.A. Milne. I know this now, because of a plaque on the railings, by the river Anton, at Andover. Well I never.

There are indeed. Some very respectable climbs too. I'm going out to Basingstoke, via Old Alresford and the back roads tomorrow. It looks like there are a few nice out of the way pubs and the like on the route.
