New Chevy dealership in Bournemouth
Discussion
I was at DVLA office in Wimbledon Friday and overheard a Dealer speaking to the DVLA staff stating that she worked for a multi franchise company setting up a Chevy dealership in Croydon. I politely asked the Lady if she new if they would deal in Corvettes but she only handled Taxation and did not know. The dealership will be on the Purley Way at the old Daewoo Showroom next to IKEA.
I've just spoken to Cadillac Europe re the steering lock recall, and I asked if these new dealerships would be able to take in Corvette recall or warranty work - she said no!
IMHO I think that the 'Corvette' is now a brand in itself and maybe distanced from the Chevrolet/Daewoo brand.

Hi Mark I know in Europe they are going just to call it
a Corvette because Chevrolet is not a UK brand but they are keeping Chevrolet Corvette for the US, but if they do launch the C6 in the UK they will have to have some dealers and I bet some will be down South, I do not think real money people would buy a car that could only be serviced in Manchester and you need a few of them to make it worth selling in the uk.

The Corvette will be a stand-alone brand in the UK, like "Mini". It will not be associated with Daewoo but rather aligned to the Cadillac franchises where it will sell alongside the XLR and other Cadillacs. there will be no physical connection between the Daewoos and the Corvettes.
Saabs are just tarted up Vectras and Daewoos will become synonymous with the now degraded and humiliated Chevrolet brand. Fortunately, the name Chevrolet has never appeared on a Corvette since at least 1984 and possibly even before that, being identified by the crossed flags and the Corvette tag. Similarly, the Camaro never had any Chevrolet badge on it from the mid 80's onwards, only a bow tie and a French shield so there is no danger of anyone associating my Z28 with a poxy little scumbag piddle paddle tosspot paper hankie of a Daewoo wearing a legendary badge.
Now when people ask me what my car is, I say "That's a Camaro and that's a Corvette. Ain't nobody going to associate my muscle cars with some no good p*ssant cars shamelessly exploiting the Chevrolet name tag.
Screw you, GM, we all hate you. Perhaps you can stick a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am badge on a Fiat next....

I'll be honest, I never ever thought Saab had much of an image. I recall very well the 2 stroke and V4 94's before the 99 came along and rejuvenated Saab's image and then the Turbo boosted it's profile but to no greater degree than Vauxhall achieved with the HP Firenza and Chevette HS before returning to mainstream tat.
Saab, meanwhile, gave us the 900, a revised 99 and I once owned a 900 GLS and boy, it was a very old car underneath. I drove a Mk II (fwd) Cavalier when I had the Saab and couldn't believe it - it felt like a sports car next to the old clunker. Then we got the 9000 which shared it's architecture with venerable cars like the Thema, Croma and possibly a Peugeot. If it weren't for the Turbos, it would inevitably have gone the same way as those cars. Thereafter, all I remember is cars that looked sadly too much like the 900 GLS. So if Saab ever had an image, I regret it passed me by. My sister had a 9-3 and all I recall about it was how much I didn't want one.
I think Saab still retains a slightly classier than your average Ford status but more akin to Lancia or Volvo than BMW.

I bought a Saab 9000 Griffin in 1996 brand new from the Saab dealer in Reading and they (the dealer) and the car was excellent. Owned the car for 2 or 3 years (can't remember which) and it was a diamond. Very quick, very comfortable and excellent service.
On the Bournemouth delaership front, I wouldn't have thought it would be a "Corvette" dealer more like a Daewoo/Chevrolet dealer.....

Hi Wayne,
Ummm... Stop beating about the bush and say what you mean.
Serious for a mo, and this isn't a test question cos I didn't know about the french shield on the Camaro, do you know it's significance?
Not sure I'll like the answer cos I hate the frog b@st@rds, I'm allowed to say that cos I worked with them from 1992 to 2003, in Total.
Curious minds need to know, at least this one does.

Louis Chevrolet was a French-speaking Swiss who immigrated into Canada before making his way to New York. He resigned from the company when he believed his name should go on a high-status car ( a sort of Swiss Rolls - he he)and it was left to others to fulfil the vision of the common car for the common man using the Chevrolet brand name.

The name "Chevrolet" is thought to be a French corruption of "goat's milk."
The French connection was undoubtedly the fault of the marketing department who wanted a badge to reflect the Chevrolet brand. You will note the Corvette flags contain a fleur-de-lys and this came about from an attempt to dig up a crest from the Chevrolet family history but finding nothing, they adopted the fleur de lys on the basis that the name Chevrolet was French in origin and it was an alternative to using the US flag on the badge which was illegal. So just be thankful that it wasn't the Swiss flag they used.

So your Chevrolet owes it's "theoretical" roots to the Swiss and to Chevrolet's original mechanical genius However, in reality, it owes it's existence to William Durant, a Boston-born American who founded General Motors. In actuality, Louis Chevrolet had sweet FA to do with the establishment of Chevrolet as the most profitable motoring division of GM, it was all down to Durant.

However, even Durant was short-lived and it was Pierre DuPont who became director of GM in 1915 who carried the company to ultimate success.THe DuPonts were French in origin and after one of the family ended up on the guillotine, the family fled to America with a vast fortune and set up a gunpowder business. From that came Pierre DuPont and his establishment of GM as a corporate giant.

As far as Durant's philosophy of Chevrolet is concerned, a car for the masses, the Daewoo probably fits right in there but Louis Chevrolet's dream of seeing his name on a high status car has ironically been destroyed by removing his name from the Corvette. Ah, irony...it can be so ironic. As far as DuPont's vision goes, his aim was to create a company with various divisions that people could trade up to and in that respect, Daewoo would also fit in with his plan - although whether a Daewoo driver would ever aspire to a cadillac in this day and age is doubtful.
