Can oem furry/fuzz/flock be removed DIY ?

The rear parcel shelf on the car has a dull, dark grey oem furry/fuzz surface. I would like to get it re-flocked professionally in a different colour. To try and save a few pennies is there any way that the fuzz can be removed from the plastic by DIY at home ?
Would soaking the shelf soften the glue so it could be scraped off ?
Wire brush in electric drill and go slow and careful ?
Any other ideas that have worked ?
