We bought another car recently and two people, a Dealer salesman and Private seller both made stupid remarks. I never do all the talking, My fiancee and I both enjoy buying cars, she asks her own questions, knows what she wants BUT for some reason she will ask them a question.... and they will answer me. Its very strange, I just laugh when they start talking to me only.

So recently:

OH inquires about a 530i, Salesman says to me: 'Is a 5 series too big for herself?'

Bought a car off a Private Seller, just as she was getting in it to drive it home, I was following in our car, he turns to her and says: 'Oh god, Have you ever driven a powerful car before?... Please don't crash it!'

Now my fiancee doesn't get mad but sees the stupidity in it as little do they know, shes the one with the money and want of 'big' 'powerful' cars!

What have you experienced?

My mum went in to Audi to have a look at the Q7. No salespeople came near here, she had to ask for a brochure, of which the salesman gave to her an then walked away saying it is an expensive car.

My dad went to Porsche and bought her a Cayenne instead. Which was by far the better car anyway.

My wife leaves cars to me to deal with entirely, however in the past my mother walked into a BMW dealership to replace her E23 728i she had since new in 1981, this was at the time the E39 5 series was on sale - they had a red 535i in the showroom she liked it said I'll have that one after having a look over it. Dealer turned to her and said 'Don't you think you should ask your husband what colour he'd like?'. What a moron, my parents never bought another BMW and defected to Lexus after that.

We get that.

We went to a vw/audi dealer, 1 site but 2 different sales offices. I went in and got talked to about their cars etc, met her outside and the bloke had just ignored her, when she got his attention, she was dismissed. Shame, he missed a sale that day. I was going to go in and start talking and get her to come in and say something, but we just walked away.

She's had a z4m before and knows her cars, so not like she'd not understand.

To be fair to them, it's probably quite often the case that the car is for the woman but the man is making, or at least interfering in, the decision.

I have been known to search for a car for my wife. She doesn't mind much which one she gets as long as its decent enough, but she does insist on a least coming along for the test drives laugh, resulting in a situation where the salesman thinks 'I'm actually selling to this guy'.

No excuse for not distinguishing between that kind of case and the OP's, but you can see how the habit develops.

is that a joke?

So your family reinforced the sterotypes by a) the wife not buying herself a car and b) the man of the house buying a car for his wife. Way to go.

I have had exactly the opposite recently when looking at a car for my wife. It was so obvious I thought it was down to specific sales training on the subject.

No matter how much I steered the conversation he just kept on responding to my wife, took her contact details etc. All very nice and PC but I am the one who will do the negotiations, make the decision and hand over the money. I am no chauvinist but have been married 20 yrs plus and there are just things we let each other take the lead on..... For example, I have never made a purchasing decision in a garden centre and only been lightly consulted in furniture stores.

So you're in a garage looking at a car for your wife, salesman takes her details, talks to her about what she wants etc and that's an issue because you're the man and deal with the money?

But you let her do the gardening and furniture? Bless, I bet you let her choose the washing powder too?

If anyone comes in and says 'the car is for me' they get the attention and question, not the husband/partner/mum/dad/dog. Otherwise you get topics like this one where the salesman was 'sexist' or 'didn't care what my wife wanted' etc etc.

P.s, the tale above of the woman being ignored at Audi then being bought a Cayenne is just comedy gold rofl

I feel quite let down by your post, the title lead me to believe they had said something about your Fiancees tits or something....

However, can I point out you are being sexist by accompanying her on her car buying sprees, can she not manage on her own considering she 'knows what she wants', or does she need a man with her just incase she does something silly?
