Is a 1.6 too much?
Discussion
So I'm planning on buying my first car, Ford Fiesta Zetec S (1.6). I learnt in a 1.6 Baker Street Mini Cooper and could comfortably control it and felt it was just right. My parents feel a 1.6 is too much for a first car however I feel differently. I can imagine you will be thinking about insurance but its only group 7 which is amazing! Shocked me as well. Anyway what do people think of this car and engine size.

It can be safer to have a quicker car so when you try and overtake stuff you will get past safely rather than a close call.
Er...Just having a bigger engine so you can get it done is safer for all.
I'm not suggesting it gives him an accuse to overtake more stuff; but when you're a young lad, well you can't help yourself.

Don't buy based on engine size, buy based on insurance costs.
In many cases, there will be larger (1.6) cars that come up cheaper to insure than a 1.0 or 1.2
BHP is possibly a more relevant figure than engine size too.
Just to add some actual useful advise rather than getting told of for suggesting more power is safer. In many cases, there will be larger (1.6) cars that come up cheaper to insure than a 1.0 or 1.2

It's all done on statistics. There are cars such as your Corsa's, Fiesta's, Clio's etc. which are often first time cars. As a result, there are a lot more accidents in them. So the likelihood of a Clio having a crash compared to, let's say a Skoda Yeti, is probably ten fold.
The insurance group plays a part, but to my understanding it's a lot more down to how often a particular car is involved in accidents, likelihood of being stolen etc.
In a word, No.
I have a 1.6 civic (VTEC Sport ohhh yes)
Fast it is not. But theres enough poke that it does the job for NSL work, and by selecting the right gear (so the tacho needle is above 3500 rpm) there is enough from the engine to perform overtakes safely.
Seriously, you'll be fine.

You could drive a 1.0 litre car like a moron and crash and kill everyone on board, including yourself. You could drive a 2.0 litre car like Miss Daisy in on the backseat and be safe.
As others have said, sometimes having enough power to get around a problem can be a benefit. It can get you both into and out of trouble.
Simply put, drive sensibly and all will be well. Do not try to "impress" your friends when driving. It may be boring but get some fun driving done on tracks etc.
