BMW 328i E36 or 330ci E46
Discussion
E36 is a bit less complex so maybe easier to fix when something goes wrong.
Recently bought an E36 325i Coupe and it drives pretty well - good ride quality, very balanced handling and pretty quiet on the motorway. The 328i is apparently much torquier and easier to go fast in.
Not driven E46s much but people say the E36 feels more 'mechanical' and perhaps more interactive to drive.
The E36 is lighter, smaller and possible a tad better on fuel than the 330.
Not all E36s had aircon so maybe check if that's an issue for you.
Check the 328i has had the nikasil liners replaced, or is a later car ('98 or later) with the alusil engine.
Cooling system problems probably affect both cars - I've just splashed out replacing most of the cooling system in mine as a precaution.
If you want a motorway wafter than maybe take the '46. If you want a more responsive drivers car then the '36.
