RAF Tornado Evening Launch

[Stuck In A Lift]

This GR4 left RAF Coningsby about 7:45PM on Wednesday evening. Brutal, stunning and shocking would be the best way to describe the launch.

Looks like a fairly normal Tornado take off to me - to be fair.

I know that the real RAF people saw this all the time and it's just a day at the office for them, but in 1979 I stayed at Coningsby with the ATC. Watching the Phantoms do night flying training, circuits and missed approaches etc with afterburners shooting blue flames was mighty impressive to a 14 year-old me.

Ignoring the fact you can see the flames from the 'burners, not normal in broad daylight.

As in shot another approach to low overshoot and depart? Sounds like a single-engine heavyweight to me - standard BTR (basic training requirement - i.e. needed periodically to keep current).

Reminds me of watching them take off when they were based at cottesmore. Spent many an evening up there they would quite often launch with just one lit.

I was going to get a night take off last Thursday at approx 10PM, but the crew stood it down.

I'm currently at a non flying unit so really miss this stuff - thanks! I love watching the Tornados take off, but the feel of the ground shaking when sat not far from a b1 taking off is something I will never forget plus in the desert at dusk it looks pretty awesome.

If I only I worked harder at school to fly them .

If they were really bright, they'd know how to fix 'em!
