So my 140 mile commute that normally takes me around 2 and a half hours took over 4 hours today. I have no idea why it took so long as every time I came to a queue that had been flashing on the Matrix signs, there was no reason for said queue. This was on the good old fking M1, the nation's car park. I averaged 35mph over my 140 miles. 35 fking mph. Its a fking joke.

I do not understand why motorway driving is so difficult, and why there are so many accidents on motorways. Everyone is going in the same direction of travel, generally doing the same speed. All you should need to worry about are making sure the lane you want to join has enough space for you, and watching for cars wanting to join your lane. It is hardly fking rocket science. Yet so many people cannot do this basic task. I first drove on a motorway when I'd passed my test. I went with someone who had a fair bit of experience of driving motorways so that I had someone with me who could give me advice if needed. It wasn't needed, but it was nice to have the backup just in case. I think everyone who passes their test SHOULD be made to take a motorway test before being allowed anywhere near a motorway, and it should be compulsory. Failure to do so and then driving on the motorway should result in a ban until said test is taken. No if's, no but's.

I could barely manage to get up to 70mph today, could get no momentum, just stop, start, stop, start. The motorways are over capacity, and not enough is being done to compensate. I know all this has been brought up before but I am still steaming from my trip making me late to work! Its a fking outrage!

Lifes a bh. Enjoy.

Do share the frustration when I have to travel >100 miles for work. However if your daily commute is 140 miles unfortunately you will have to expect delays from time to time.

140 miles in usually 2 1/2 hours you say? Try achieving that on any other road sequence than motorways!

Luckily I only need to do this once a week (well, and one trip home again at the end of the working week).
2 and a half hours I can live with, over 4 I cannot. This is the first time it has taken longer than 2 and a half hours.

Trouble is you wanna drive too fast, and then wonder why life/time is passing you by.

Should chill out and enjoy it, slow is cool.

Then you are very fortunate. (Don't tell me, you've only done it twice biggrin)

You may have a point, but then when I am working I rent a room near by, so I only need commute once, so I doubt I am adding that much to the problem.

On the contrary, I set my cruise at 75mph on the speed (so under 70 in real life). I allow myself ample time to get to work in case of any issues, but didnt expect today.

Spent a lot of time on the M6 recently where they open the hard shoulder to make it 4 lanes, but nobody uses it!!!! It is always empty (apart from me), I just don't understand why no-one uses it.

Motorway behaviour makes no sense at all in the UK.

Whereas when I go to France it is great - only 2 lanes, but everyone sticks to the correct lane, pulls back in after overtaking etc. A lot less traffic, so I guess it's easier, but overall a much more pleasant experience.

The problem is people doing 140 mile commutes on the motorway.

That is what causes traffic jams.

m1 is for rookies.

Try the m25. My 90 mile commute took 6 hours today. It's an average 4 hours when the kids aren't on holiday.

So on an average day your commute is 4 hours? That's there and back I take it? Or just one way?

4 hours there, 4 hours back. Normal van, not an HGV.

Who me ?

Always the same on the M1 , on Friday afternoons. Too many folks travelling home and the trip is spoilt by "Mr Important", who always has to get past that stream of traffic in his special lane( L3), so he hares up L2, till he finds a gap in L3, barges in,forcing the following pack( who are usually travelling too close ) to panic and do a nigh on emergency stop. If tghey think L2 is moving faster, then it's straight into L2, MAKE A BIT OF DISTANCE AND THEN BARGE INTO l3.

There's plenty of capacity on the motorway network. The problem isn't capacity. The problem is morons. With correct lane discipline and sensible gaps, everything would flow perfectly. Sadly, it only takes a couple of morons to believe they can get ahead by tailgating, sticking to the outermost lane (which they have to get to within two seconds of joining the motorway or they'll melt or something), forcing themselves into tiny gaps (tiny gaps because some other moron is tailgating) and generally driving like an inconsiderate bumweasel. They're just far too stupid to realise they're slowing everything down by trying to be quick.

Even comments like "I set my cruise control to 75mph (less than 70mph in the real world)". Well done, anus. Sadly, your real world figure would only be relevant if every other person on the motorway was using a perfectly calibrated speedometer. And 75mph? Why!? What are you really gaining from that extra 5mph?

Honestly, if I could round up these dunderheaded cretins, I'd have them tied to pointy rocks and bummed to death by angry horses.

There's plenty of capacity if you view the whole network vs the whole traffic flow, but there are quite a few sections where it's simply not capable of moving the volume of people any more. The M25 is a perfect example - plenty of capacity to keep everything moving except at rush hour/when accidents happen.
