Escaping chain

Did My first ride if any distance today since moving to Sunny Shropshire.
To my annoyance the rolling little hills meant more changing down from big to little front ring and on 3 of the 6 down changes the chain jumped off completely.

Any idea why this is? Anything I can do?

Ending the day covered in oil is a tad irritating.

Any replies in layman's/idiot terms please as I'm not too practical!

You need to turn the inner adjusting screw in slightly.

Is that on the front derailleur?

Yup, one screw controls inward travel, the other outwards. Your mech is throwing the chain a little further than is necessary.

it hangs off the mech bracket and acts as a guide to make sure the chain ends up on the inner ring. Adjusting the mech is the pure and simple way to do it, but there's always that time that it happens regardless - usually if you try to drop the front ring and operate the rear at the same time, usually panic shifting in a climb that you didn't realise was that hard

Adjust it, but also try to think ahead - when there's a hill coming that looks like it might be tough, get on the small chainring, and compensate by moving the rear out. Then as you get into the hill, shift in on the rear. Front shifting is the most hit and miss of the lot, and dropping the chain off the big ring under load is asking for trouble. If you do have to change mid hill, try to surge a little and then back off 'just' as you change.

I've no chain catcher, and I can't remember the last time it dropped - pretty fastidious about having everything adjusted just so mind.

Yep been doing that as didn't the first time it happened but still occurred twice more.
