Have I got a stiff diff?

Hello all,

during today's shenanigans under the car (to change some wiring) so I'd thought I'd give the diff a bit of a test.

If I hold one rear wheel my wife can only just about turn the other. Is this normal?

I'd say asking the wife to do that is quite rare.

The early GKN diff as in my car appears to be an ATB. (auto torque biasing ) type diff which doesn't have the resistance you Speak off, mine is not very hard to turn doing the test you describe yet works well controlling wheel spin. Yours should have the later BTR diff which should behave as you describe. The general opinion is that the BTR is the BeTeR diff. (See what I did there... Clever ay. )
