I fancied something small and quirky so did a quick search for a Fiat 126 in good condition and was really surprised at the prices these cars are now commanding considering you could have picked one up 3 or 4 years ago for peanuts. Got me round to thinking what small car in excellent condition could you buy for under a grand what will never depreciate and hopefully rise in value. There are a a number of contenders I can think of.
The first is the 126 replacement a Fiat Cinquecento, preferably the Sporting model.
Renault 5 although the turbo's are way out of reach.
Nissan Micra Mk I.....don't laugh. When I was a bairn in the 60s people used to laugh at bubble cars. Really good build quality and they're not as common as they once were.
Nissan Sunny Coupe. These are thin on the ground but you can still pick up an excellent one for under a grand.
Any more suggestions?

Renault 4. Granted £1000 will get you a very rough one.

Jaguar XJ6 or XJ8 (X300 or X308). Beautifully scultped, big petrol engines. A modernish interpretation of the classic Jaguar design. The new XJ is a very cool car but it's hardly recognisable as a Jaguar.

I love the Renault 4 and 6 (I had a 6 back in the late 70s)but a one in excellent order would, unfortunately be way out of reach. I was thinking more along the lines of a car which is currently "undesirable".

Citroen LNA seems unloved.
There is a MoTed one for £500 on Classic Cars.

Agreed. They still look sharp. Silver suits them.

I think these cars are massively undervalued but would fear an under a grand example could be a huge money-pit. Awesome cars though. Back in the 70s a friend's parents had a XJ12. Bloody gorgeous!

This thing, apparently a modern classic and could be in 'could be concourse with minimal work'.

Now I actually know the previous owner (step-grandad) and he bought this cheap to get back on the road, its nice condition but it has no appealing features.

Am I missing something or are some cars just old rather than 'modern classics' or 'future classics'.

Back in 1990 you could have bought a Citroen 2CV or a Fiat 126 for less money than an Astra but a good condition example will today command a far higher price. What I'm trying to guess are models that haven't made the transition from undesirable to desirable. Looking back over the years I've sold cars for next to nothing as they were basically worthless. I'd really love to have that Cortina MK III or my Renault 6 back.

Yes, good examples trade for more than a grand, though that's not to say ever sub-£1000 XJ is a shonka! Still, these are the zenith of XJ design and classically British. I am not sure in 40 years time they'll still be styling the XJ after the model you can buy in showrooms now, nor will anyone be looking back and calling it a design classic, as handsome as it is.

Indeed, buy low mileage now and rust proof what metal is still left and you could be on a winner.

Great cars, but find one that's solid underneath! I had one which had a bit of the usual crispy arch syndrome, looked OK other than that. One day I was changing the rear trailing arm bush and put my hand through the sill as it had all gone!
