Hi I have recently bought a car that has a repair on the fuel tank seam frown. Its not a welded repair its with fibre glass or something similar and a bandage, is this acceptable?

I've repaired a few tanks on classics.

The best stuff is the gloop you pour inside the tank as it seals everything - the problem being that you have to remove the tank.

The bandage stuff - is it leaking ? If not then I think you'll have a tough time rejecting it.

However if it was leaking due to rust - you WILL have problems as the rust clogs the filter and injectors

What do you mean a tough time rejecting it?

You might also check to see if the car is subject to a recall due to fuel tank corrosion.

But if it's not leaking, you've no real call to complain.

And is a repaired fuel tank ok? I suppose it depends how permanent the repair is. Is it a job for a mechanic to swap the tank?

Most cars are more awkward than difficult, but expect rusty fasteners, etc.

Steel tank or plastic?

Is the car something common enough that you're likely to easily find a replacement tank?

So it's not too uncommon to repair fuel tanks?

TELL US WHAT THE CAR IS!

Some cars have well known issues with the fuel tank (bmw 7).

What the tank is and what it is made of would help people give useful info.

Is the car an old classic or a newish hot hatch?

Check if there's a recall for rotten tanks. Easy way to get one for free.

Is there anything you can paint over the fuel tank/ seams, to help stop any rust?

Just weld it up to be sure.

Of a horrible death.

Unless you really, really, know what you're doing (and are feeling brave) don't weld fuel tanks, children.
