I've been looking at a car, one of the MOT advisories is for the airbag light not coming on
The MOT manual seems to suggest that this is a fail not an advisory.

I know there was some talk about them backing down on the requirements when they were due to come in, so what is the current situation ?

The car's airbag light has been bodged. That's the situation. Run away...

But yes, I think that should be a fail not an advisory.

yeah i know it's been bodged
it's close to making me run away, but it's a cheap shed so it might be worth taking the risk that it's a cheap fix, but not if it won't get through it's next mot if i can't fix it

If you want to add a bodge to a bodge, then a transistor and resistor and a capacitor are all you need to make the light "come on for a bit at key-on". Of course, if you do this, and sell the car one, fooling the next buyer into thinking the airbags are fully working, you could be in a whole world of trouble..........

Current wording, from the official source :-
http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/m4s05000401.htm

It's not "indicating a malfunction", in that isn't on all the time - but it's clearly not healthy, because it's not doing the self-test - so a tester may well decide that's indication of a malfunction, and he wouldn't be out of order in doing so.

A non functioning SRS warning lamp is a pass & advise, the fail for the lamp is :-

A Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) malfunction indicator lamp indicating a system malfunction.

A lamp that doesn't light up can't indicate a system malfunction.

I have bucket seats so no air bags. Blanked out air bag light with duct tape and it passes MOT ?

Don't some of the "warning lamp" issues depend upon when the car was first registered?

i.e. some stuff which manufacturers had been fitting to quite a lot of cars only became "compulsory" further down the line.

If it comes on and stays on it's a fail, if it doesn't come on at all it's a pass, I wouldn't even bother advising it.

OK, I'll bite. Why does "bucket seats" mean "no air bags"?

the site i looked at
http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_540.htm
states
2.
A Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) malfunction indicator lamp:

. inoperative

. indicating a system malfunction.

this is it seems is an out of date version, so i guess that is what i remember about the issue being backed down on slightly

because they don't have built in airbags like many modern seats

Assuming he means he has a 4/5/6 point harness as well, thus no need for an airbag as it's a bit pointless...

Look at the proper official testers manual here:

http://www.transportoffice.gov.uk/crt/doitonline/b...

The same section, 5.4.2 which has the vertical black lines next to it that denotes an amendment.

With the bucket seats thing, the car really needs to be modified for competition use, stripped out, roll cage, full harness, competition history etc., otherwise it'll run the risk of failing on missing SRS components that were fitted as original equipment, regardless of what the SRS warning lamp does.

Yep can only fail for being on, as said above can also fail a car for a missing air bag that was there from new but if ie been stripped for track use will come under another set of rules.

The reason it doesn't illuminate is that there is a problem with the system that could potential be expensive and the previous owner just wanted it through the mot to get rid of.

It can, because the lack of self-test indicates that the system is malfunctioning...

It's bad wording. They really need to either clarify by saying correct self-test does not need to happen, or say that lack of correct self-test is a malfunction.

There is leeway for modified cars otherwise it would end rallying overnight.

Not sure about that specific car but many cars now have seat-belt pre-tensioners that are "tested" by the same system (eg SRS) and will light the air bag light if a fault is detected. Replace with bucket seats and a harness and you'll get the light on.

My 1998 Mondeo once decided to flash the air bag light, turned out to be a bottle had rolled under the passenger seat and disturbed the wiring to the seat belt. One disconnect and re-connect and it was all fine but if you've removed the seat belt to fit a harness you don't have that option!

That's ignoring the air-bags in seats etc (and again even my 1998 Mondeo had those).
