Driving with gloves on - sad or essential?

Nothing beats driving with the roof down on a day like yesterday - sunny, crisp, but very cold! So what's the verdict on here for driving with gloves on - either with proper driving gloves or simply something to keep the hands warm? My inclination was towards driving gloves being the reserve of old people out for a Sunday drive, but now I'm thinking they're probably a good idea. What about plain leather - how do they fair for grip on the steering wheel?

Gloves are a must this time of year, I have a Gortex pair that work pretty well - but they are wearing a bit thin (I know the feeling) so yesterday I put a leather pair over the top of them!

I only wear gloves in the cold - but see quite a few people who wear them whatever the weather.

Besides, I can keep my left hand warm with the gear knob.

Was out with the Wedge boys yesterday up at Henley on Thames, very fast drive home on M4 / M25 roof down, no gloves, hands are now fixed in steering grip position, something to add to the Xmas list.

I assume this is a tongue in cheek question If not I can't believe people could be so egotistical that their appearance is more important to them than frostbite in their figertips I can't get my head round this continual debate on pistonheads. People look right idiots when they go skiing yet wear those Andy Pandy suits willingly to keep warm, yet worry themselves silly about putting a pair of gloves on to drive their soft-top on a frosty day! Plain black leather, works for me at the moment.

Seem to make it easier to control as well, no idea why, any theorys welcome.

I wouldn't say I was "worrying myself silly" over this one, just wondered what people thought. Was more interested in the practicalities of non-driving gloves before spending out on a pair.
So....hats...cool or crap?

Wasn't aimed at You Gav,Sorry! But this question crops up every winter and when I say wear gloves to keep your hands warm someone always says I wouldn't be seen dead in driving gloves

p.s. I keep a pair of bog standard M&S leather gloves in the Griff, double up if I have to go to a meeeting in a suit and need gloves.

Old fashioned gents driving gloves, were essential in the S3 but even now are an absolute blessing as Cerbera heating is a little crap (except when it's hot in which case its excessive) and my grin-induced need to keep the window open for pop & bang appreciation means I've started wearing them again.

Beside the warmth factor, the extra grip proper driving gloves give is amazing.

Funny you should ask.. I do indeed have one that was handed down from my older brother a few years ago. I would definitely wear it but unfortunately I think I've outgrown it slightly!

I would not be seen dead without mine, when the roof is off, in the winter, but i guess the blue sparco gloves kinda clash a little

I'll second that - I have a pair of black leather drivers for al fresco motoring, but even now in the Cerb they're a god send when it's chilly. Once the beggar is warmed up, it's not a problem, but yes , the minute you crack the window open, it's Siberia time! Also that alloy gearknob is furckin freezing until the gearbox has warmed through!

It's must be something about leather gripping on leather (ooooh Matron) but I find they do give me a good sense of extra grip and control...

Have you considered stitching white fluffy cuffs on to the gloves, to tie in with the collar of the jacket?

(This fashion top tip is copyright, BTW)
