RE: Porsche brings 911s back from the shed
Wednesday 17th September 2014

Who doesn't love hearing about a thorough restoration project? Nobody, that's who. And Porsche GB has been getting onto the bandwagon that already seems to have spawned about 62 different TV series with the second running of its Classic Restoration Competition.
Porsche brings 911s back from the shed
Old Turbos and Targas rescued by Porsche Centres, will be shown at Classic Motor Show

The premise is as simple as the name suggests. The competition is open to all Porsche Centres in the UK, and they must find and restore a needy Porsche in time to be judged before the Classic Motor Show in November. This year, to mark 40 years since the 911 Turbo's introduction and the launch of the latest Targa, all entrants must either be turbocharged or feature that not-quite-a-cabrio roof.
You can see a few of the entrants (there are 16 in total) below. There's a great selection with 911 Turbos represented in 930, 993 and 996 flavours, plus some 924s and 944s. Plus tired Targas from the 70s to 90s.
The winning Porsche Centre will be awarded a trip to Camp4, which sounds like it should be surrounded by barbed wire but is in fact Porsche's winter driving experience centre in Finland. All the restored cars will be shown at the NEC show in November and the judging is at Brands Hatch this Sunday.
Discussion
Will the cost and work involved be available?
I'm sure there will be some interested parties if it's reasonable and would assume £70 ph labour for the over 4 year old cars will be met or bettered :-)
Can't imagine a 996 turbo looking too shabby - Porsche started using materials that didn't dissolve in the European climate by then.

You may like to give that advise to some dealer principles. I can assure you it wont be needed here at Porsche Centre Cambridge. I brought our award winning car from last year to the Sunday service at Silverstone last weekend for all to see.
Speaking as a Technician who ran a specialists for several years and has personally restored many 911s. Our previous and future projects will be held to very high standards. I don't think you will find many "fitters" working at OPCs.

Why don't you do a build thread ? Not sure where it sits in terms of "advertising" with PH Towers but I can't think of much better/more targeted audience for displaying your prowess! Mmmm... I can guess who is indirectly paying for the technicians' time while they are indulging in these lovely restorations... must find me a centre that is NOT participating
No worse than the fact that you are paying for that lovely coffee machine in reception and the nice shag-pile in the showroom or the shiny glass and the suited and booted salesmen. In fact no, it's better. They could spend that money on a nice shiny advert in the magazines or few trips to The Ring instead a half dead Porsche lives again!
Hurrah!
Oh and Silverstone's "944" is a much rarer (and infinitely nicer) 924 Carrera

Shame on you!

The last time they did this the results were mixed, some of the work was of poor quality and to non-original spec. If I were an OPC DP involved in this I'd pay a good independent specialist to look over the shoulder of my team of fitters as they 'restored' the car.
SS7
Hardly a 'fitters' task or quality of work if I'm not mistaken!! Good work Newcastle OPC https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.74173613...SS7
Gives my 924 turbo a run for its money...... and beats it hands down!!

What model is that exactly? It looks like an SC from the (optional upgrade) rear spoiler, but the wheels look like 16" and it looks lowered?Speaking as a Technician who ran a specialists for several years and has personally restored many 911s. Ironically, the page of the bodyshop owned (I believe) by the local BMW Dealership (but they're Porsche Approved of course) ;0I can't say I like the paintjob either - did they ever look like that and if so - why?

Next time we start a project, I'm sure a build thread will be high on my agenda.
"What model is that exactly? It looks like an SC from the (optional upgrade) rear spoiler, but the wheels look like 16" and it looks lowered?"
Yes it is an SC. It's one of the last run, so came from factory with the bigger spoiler. It's not exactly lowered. All suspension is original. We simply set it up (within tolerance) the way we liked it.
Thanks for all the kind words guys. Despite the arguments about how our dealership should spend its money. In reality the car with be auctioned off at a charity dinner. All profit made over the restoration costs will be donated to Wizzkids. A disabled children's charity. From the pre auction offers we have had, it will be many thousands of pounds.
