I have a nail in the tyre close to the sidewall. But still in the main tread pattern. Bloke says can't be repaired because it's going down? Never been mentioned before when having a repair before. Is he just trying to flog a new tyre?

Typically only something in the centre 2/3'rds of the tread can be repaired, as a rough rule (the puncture repair patch is like a mushroom, and the wide part of the patch must adhere on a flat surface on the inside of the tyre).

It cannot be plugged but a hot vulcanised repair can be done. You will need to find a garage that can do this and they will probably need the tyre for a day or so.
